The Camera Control feature introduced in the iPhone 16 received a variety of feedback, including my own. However, the recent update to iOS 18.2 enhances this feature significantly, aligning it more closely with its intended purpose.
Boosted by Visual Intelligence
The notable update in the Camera Control with iOS 18.2 is the integration of visual intelligence.
By simply long-pressing Camera Control, users can access a specialized mode that delivers essential information about their surroundings, along with actionable shortcuts.
Apple describes this innovation:
Users can press and hold Camera Control to view details like restaurant hours and ratings, quickly add calendar events from flyers, identify dog breeds, and more. This feature also opens pathways to third-party tools, allowing users to search for items on Google or utilize ChatGPT’s problem-solving capabilities.
My colleague Fernando created a video showcasing ten unique applications for visual intelligence. I strongly encourage you to check it out and discover what your iPhone 16 can accomplish with iOS 18.2.
Quick Access to the Camera
Another significant enhancement in iOS 18.2 is the improved speed of the Camera app launch through Camera Control.
In the Settings under Display and Brightness, a new toggle labeled ‘Require Screen On’ for Camera Control is available.
Simply grab your iPhone, press Camera Control, and your camera is primed and ready.
Additional Features and Options
Additionally, iOS 18.2 introduces a two-stage shutter feature, which Apple highlighted during its September presentation.
Within Settings under Camera Control, there is a new toggle for AE/AF Lock.
Activating this allows a light press on Camera Control to lock both focus and exposure, enabling a gentle press to secure these parameters before a firmer press captures the photo.
There’s also a new setting in Accessibility under Camera Control to adjust the speed of a double-click action, with options available in Default, Slow, and Slower speeds.
Conclusion on iOS 18.2 Camera Control
Camera Control in iOS 18.2 represents the feature Apple intended to launch with the iPhone 16, enhancing its functionality considerably. This update positions the dedicated button as a truly valuable tool that users can fully leverage.
