Samsung is gearing up to phase out support for its DeX for Windows app with the release of the upcoming One UI 7 update.
According to Android Authority, recent updates to Samsung’s DeX webpage on its UK site indicate that the DeX for Windows feature will no longer be available starting with One UI 7, expected in 2025. The company suggests that users migrate to the Phone Link feature as an alternative option.
“The DeX for PC on Windows OS will end support with the release of One UI 7. We invite users to connect their mobile devices with PCs using the Link to Windows feature,” noted Samsung on its website.
The DeX for Windows function enabled smartphone users to link their devices to a PC, converting a Windows environment into a Samsung DeX interface, which stands for “Desktop eXperience.”
While Phone Link may not replicate every aspect of DeX for Windows, it allows users to project their smartphone screens onto a computer monitor and access applications remotely. This feature is also functional wirelessly and supports various Android devices beyond the Samsung brand.
Samsung and Microsoft’s ongoing partnership has facilitated the integration of Phone Link for Samsung smartphones and many other devices. There hasn’t been any official announcement regarding possible enhancements to Phone Link following the discontinuation of DeX for Windows. Still, a recent leak from Samsung’s Spanish site hinted at significant visual and functional improvements in One UI 7, including various AI updates.
According to Android Central, Samsung’s choice to retire DeX for Windows likely stems from its limited user base. However, the DeX platform will remain available, focusing primarily on compatibility with TVs, monitors, and other large-screen devices, as noted by the publication.
