Qatar Airways To Provide Starlink Internet On Flights

Qatar Airways, the largest global airline, has announced a partnership with SpaceX‘s Starlink, becoming the first airline in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region to do so.

This collaboration will enhance the in-flight experience for passengers by offering a complimentary, state-of-the-art service that opens up a world of entertainment and information.

First Phase of the Rollout

Three Boeing 777-300s are set to be the first aircraft in Qatar Airways’ fleet to receive this upgrade, which includes Starlink’s revolutionary, ultra-high-speed, low-latency Wi-Fi onboard. The upgrade is scheduled for completion by the last quarter of this year.

This initiative marks the start of an extensive rollout strategy. Over the next two years, the service is planned to extend across Qatar Airways’ entire modern fleet.

Ultra-High-Speed Wi-Fi for Passengers

Passengers will be able to enjoy complimentary Wi-Fi with speeds of up to 500 Megabits per second. This ultra-high-speed connection will allow passengers to stream their favorite movies, watch live sports, and even enjoy online gaming at 30,000 feet, replicating the comfort and convenience of home.

This partnership underscores Qatar Airways’ commitment to continually raising the bar for in-flight experiences and setting new standards for the aviation industry.

  • Qatar Airways’ Current In-Flight WiFi Providers: Qatar Airways currently relies on two in-flight WiFi providers: SITA On-air and Inmarsat’s GX satellite service.
  • Starlink’s Technology: Starlink is a division of Elon Musk’s SpaceX program, offering high-speed broadband connectivity through an extensive network of over 2,000 satellites orbiting in low Earth orbit.
  • Industry Trends: Qatar Airways is the latest airline to join the growing list of carriers opting for Starlink services, following JSX, Hawaiian Airlines, airBaltic, and ZIPAIR.
  • Timeline: The first three Boeing 777-300 aircraft will be upgraded with Starlink’s technology by the end of this year, with the entire modern fleet set to be upgraded within the next two years.

The partnership with Starlink marks a significant shift in the in-flight connectivity landscape, as traditional GEO satellites are being challenged by Low Earth Orbit (LEO) constellations like SpaceX’s Starlink. This development is expected to redefine the in-flight experience, offering passengers faster and more reliable internet connectivity than ever before.

Qatar Airways’ commitment to providing the best in-flight experience for its passengers is evident in this strategic partnership. The airline’s decision to offer complimentary Starlink Wi-Fi will be a major competitive advantage, setting it apart from other airlines in the industry.

The rollout of Starlink Wi-Fi on Qatar Airways’ fleet is expected to begin in the last quarter of this year, with the entire modern fleet set to be upgraded within the next two years. This development is a testament to the airline’s dedication to innovation and its commitment to providing passengers with the best possible travel experience.
