Fans of the Predator series can anticipate not just one, but two new films slated for release in 2025.
In a recent discussion with The Hollywood Reporter, Steve Asbell, president of 20th Century Studios, outlined exciting future directions for the Predator franchise. One of the highlights includes a new project directed by Dan Trachtenberg, who was at the helm of Prey. Instead of pursuing a sequel, Trachtenberg has embarked on Predator: Badlands, featuring Elle Fanning.
“After Prey became a hit, Dan [Trachtenberg] returned to us with a desire to create something different rather than a follow-up,” Asbell shared. “We asked him what direction he wanted to take, and he had a plethora of imaginative ideas. We ended up greenlighting two of them. One of these projects is a live-action Predator film starring Elle Fanning, which has recently completed filming in New Zealand. Audiences can look forward to seeing it in theaters next year.”
A hidden second Predator movie
This past week, Disney shifted its lineup, removing the release of Blade previously set for November 7, 2025, in favor of Predator: Badlands. The film, directed by Trachtenberg with a screenplay co-written by him and Patrick Aison, has been praised by Asbell. He revealed a surprising twist: Trachtenberg has secretly filmed another Predator movie that is set to debut before Badlands. However, details about this unexpected project remain under wraps.
What follows Alien: Romulus?
Shifting focus, Asbell also touched upon the Alien franchise and the triumph of Alien: Romulus, which has amassed over $350 million globally this summer. Given the film’s box office success, conversations surrounding sequels are already in progress. Asbell confirmed that 20th Century is in the early stages of developing a follow-up and anticipates moving forward once a deal is finalized with Romulus director Fede Alvarez.
“He [Alvarez] has a concept we’re currently refining,” Asbell explained. “The film’s two survivors, Rain and Andy, played by Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson, were standout characters. I often wonder about their next journey. We’re certain there will be aliens, and we expect thrilling horror sequences. But I genuinely want to explore what happens next for those two.”
Alien: Romulus is currently available for digital purchase.
