The iPhone SE is set to receive a redesign, yet it might still closely resemble the two-generation-old main iPhone model. This insight comes from Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, who indicates that the refreshed “SE” variant could launch in early 2025.

According to the report, “The new model will look like the iPhone 14, featuring a notch cutout at the top.” This could signify that the upcoming iPhone may be the last model from Apple to include a physical home button with an integrated Touch ID sensor.

Until now, the last two iPhone SE versions have shared the same design approach that originated with the iPhone 8. However, the new design is not expected to be particularly stunning, as the notch design was never really regarded as attractive, with the pill-shaped cutout from the iPhone 14 series being the current design trend.

On a positive note, with the removal of the thick bezels at the top and bottom, we can anticipate a larger display, though it will likely still feature an LCD with a 60Hz refresh rate. A more exciting and practical enhancement may involve a bigger battery and support for MagSafe.

AI Integration

One of the most intriguing features of the next iPhone SE may be its compatibility with Apple Intelligence, encompassing new generative AI capabilities that include an enhanced Siri, better app integration, and support from ChatGPT.

This also implies that the device will be equipped with Apple’s latest chip technology. Currently, Apple Intelligence is limited to the A17 Pro in the iPhone 15 Pro models and the A18 series in the iPhone 16 lineup.

It’s reasonable to expect the 2025 iPhone SE to feature the A18 chip, which fits with the pattern of its predecessors. However, with upgraded design and cutting-edge silicon comes the likelihood of a price increase.

This wouldn’t be unexpected. Apple implemented a premium for 5G with the current iPhone SE, which retails for $429. Given the extra costs associated with generative AI capabilities in terms of more expensive chips and cloud services, consumers may need to prepare for an “AI tax” next year.

In summary, the upcoming iPhone SE appears to be an exciting advancement, especially for those looking for a budget-friendly device that still delivers reliable performance without the complexities of multiple cameras and intricate touch controls.

Bloomberg also reports that upgraded iPads are anticipated to arrive next year, along with a new version of the Magic Keyboard for both the 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Air models.
