Alongside the launch of the 2026 Mobile World Congress Shanghai, a new report projects that mobile technologies will add $2.1 trillion to China’s economy by 2030, up from $1.5 trillion last year.
Last year’s contribution represented approximately 7.2% of the nation’s gross domestic product, based on data from the Mobile Economy China 2026 report released yesterday by the organization behind MWC Shanghai, the Global System for Mobile Communications Association.
The report also highlights that after years of extensive 5G deployment, China now accounts for over 40% of all global 5G connections. As coverage and capacity continue to grow, the industry is shifting focus from expanding user bases to providing faster, smarter, and more customized services. This shift is driven by the rapid commercialization of 5G-Advanced, which is currently operational in more than 330 cities across mainland China and serves over 10 million users.
Telecom operators are positioning 5G-Advanced as a foundation for mobile artificial intelligence, immersive experiences, industrial automation, and enhanced urban safety and management systems, the report notes.
At the report’s unveiling, the GSMA also showcased innovative achievements, on-site experiences, and highlights of cutting-edge technologies expected to be featured at the conference over the next three days.
Representatives from leading technology companies such as Huawei Technologies, Honor Devices, Vodafone Asia, Siemens China, AgiBot, and ZTE will discuss topics including AI, robotics, and the digital transformation of industries.
As a strategic media partner for the event, the media outlet will feature interviews with company executives and industry experts in the live studio to explore the storage industry, intelligent infrastructure, and the overseas expansion efforts of Chinese telecom firms.
