If Kraven the Hunter turns out to be the concluding entry in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, it will be departing in a rather muted fashion rather than with a grand finale. According to a report from Variety, the superhero film helmed by J.C. Chandor has only managed to accrue $4.7 million at the U.S. box office from its early Thursday and Friday screenings. A figure this low is indeed concerning.
Earlier this year, Sony’s Madame Web—which faced even more ridicule and received harsher critiques than Kraven the Hunter—opened better, debuting with $6 million on Valentine’s Day. Following its release, Madame Web ultimately tallied a domestic gross of $43 million and just over $100 million globally, a disappointing outcome for a movie that reportedly cost around $100 million to make. Currently, Kraven the Hunter appears to be on an even more troubling trajectory.
This film is projected to earn between $13 million and $15 million during its opening weekend, significantly lower than the previously estimated $20 million to $25 million. Given its production budget of approximately $110 million, these figures are particularly alarming.
This situation hardly comes as a shock. The future of Kraven the Hunter never seemed particularly promising, having been postponed multiple times since its intended release in January 2023. This pattern has been consistent with other films in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe that don’t feature Venom, like Madame Web and Morbius, which also fell short of expectations.
Morbius was the most successful of the three, earning $17.3 million on its opening day and $39 million in its first weekend back in April 2022. However, it only reached a total of $73 million domestically and $167 million worldwide. Consequently, Kraven the Hunter isn’t alone in its disappointing performance; yet, it seems poised to fare worse than its predecessor films in the Spider-Man Universe.
Kraven the Hunter is currently playing in theaters.
