HBO’s flagship series, Game of Thrones and Euphoria, are currently in the spotlight for a mix of both exciting and troubling news. During a recent press conference, Casey Bloys, the CEO of HBO and Max Content, finally spoke out about rumors regarding a prospective Game of Thrones film and the highly-anticipated third season of Euphoria.
First up is the much-discussed movie set in the Game of Thrones universe, which is in early development at Warner Bros. Bloys confirmed that studio heads Michael DeLuca and Pamela Abdy are collaborating with author George R.R. Martin on this feature film.
“They’re going to develop an idea,” Bloys shared with Variety. “We’ll see if it turns out well. We’ll review the scripts alongside them. It could be an enjoyable and intriguing endeavor. The goal of development is to determine if there’s a story that warrants a theatrical release and can be a grand spectacle.”
Initially, showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss had pitched a trilogy of films to conclude the franchise, opting for this approach over a two-season, 13-episode finale. However, the idea was scrapped in favor of additional television episodes. The conclusion of Game of Thrones faced substantial criticism, especially its divisive ending.
As for Euphoria, Bloys is managing the much-awaited third season. Nearly three years have passed since season two’s finale, and production for season three has yet to commence. Various setbacks, including challenges with creator Sam Levinson, the untimely passing of key team members, and labor strikes, have all stalled the show’s progress.
Recently, there was speculation regarding the show’s status. Jeff Sneider claimed that season three was “dead” at HBO, but Bloys swiftly dismissed those assertions. He confirmed the start date and number of episodes for the upcoming season.
“We are in production for Euphoria,” Bloys stated. “I believe we have a start date set for mid-to-late January. Nothing has changed. There was a comment online that triggered a wave of speculation. We’re moving ahead with shooting the season. I’ve read the scripts, and we are pleased. The entire cast is involved. The show is moving forward.” He added that the new season will feature eight episodes.
Concerns regarding Euphoria’s future had arisen due to the busy schedules of its stars, including Zendaya, Jacob Elordi, and Sydney Sweeney. Zendaya’s commitments for 2025 feature roles in Christopher Nolan’s next film, Spider-Man 4, and Dune: Messiah. Elordi is set to star with Margot Robbie in Wuthering Heights, which will begin production in early 2025. Additionally, Sweeney will be one of the leads in Paul Feig’s The Housemaid, slated to start filming in February 2025.
