Apple is rumored to be working on an innovative smart hub that resembles a HomePod equipped with a seven-inch display. Additionally, a more advanced version of this device could feature a robotic arm, allowing it to follow users throughout the room. In his latest Power On! newsletter, Mark Gurman shares insights on what Apple enthusiasts can anticipate from this new offering. The goal is to enhance the functionality of the existing HomePod and elevate Apple HomeKit’s capabilities. Gurman remarked, “I still consider it Apple’s most significant release of the year because it represents the first step toward a greater presence in the smart home sector.”
At present, users of HomeKit can establish a smart home hub using devices like the HomePod, HomePod Mini, or Apple TV. This upcoming smart hub aims to place HomeKit on par with competitors like Alexa and Google Assistant.

Gurman describes the upcoming smart device as a “smaller and more affordable iPad that enables users to control devices, engage in FaceTime calls, and accomplish various tasks.” However, this new hub is not expected to function independently; Gurman suggests that it “should be succeeded by a higher-end model in a few years.” This advanced version might include features like pan and tilt capabilities to ensure users remain in view during video calls, or to keep the screen in sight as individuals move about their space.
While there are varying reports about the device’s specifications, including a shift from a six-inch display, the overall vision remains clear: Apple intends to integrate AI and iPad functionalities with this smart hub to create a central hub for an Apple-centric smart home experience. Moreover, this aligns with Apple’s plans to make Siri more conversational and intuitive for users.
