George R.R. Martin Teases New Title for Game of Thrones Spinoff

The upcoming spinoff from Game of Thrones may undergo a title change before it premieres on HBO.

In a recent blog entry, author George R. R. Martin shared insights from his visit to the set of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the next fantasy series on HBO. This series is based on The Hedge Knight, the first novella in Martin’s collection Tales of Dunk and Egg. Although HBO has been promoting the show under the title A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Martin hinted that changes might be in store.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms adapts The Hedge Knight, which is the first of my Dunk & Egg tales. There are two additional stories: The Sworn Sword and The Mystery Knight,” Martin mentioned on his Not a Blog. “All three have been compiled into a book titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. This may end up being the name of the series as well… but there’s also the option of The Hedge Knight. We’re still discussing it.”

Set nearly a century before the events of Game of Thrones, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms chronicles the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall (played by Peter Claffey), a brave knight, and Egg (portrayed by Dexter Sol Ansell), a young squire.

Regardless of what it is ultimately called, the show is expected to air in 2025, according to HBO. The specific premiere date in 2025 has yet to be determined.

“Filming wrapped up not too long ago, and [showrunner] Ira Parker and his team are currently in the post-production phase, aiming for a release sometime next year,” added Martin. “I’m hopeful for spring, but that’s purely speculative; no date has been finalized yet.”

The series is slated to include six episodes. Despite any title uncertainties, Martin has already seen a rough cut of the inaugural episode and expressed his enthusiasm, stating he “loved it.”
