Game of Thrones: Kingsroad, a mobile game inspired by the hit HBO series, was officially introduced to American fans during The Game Awards 2024, courtesy of Netmarble and WB Games. While its mobile platform may seem like a drawback at first, the game offers a more ambitious experience than you might expect.
The title is a full-scale third-person action RPG, following a gameplay teaser that Netmarble presented at G-Star in November. A press release detailing the game revealed that Game of Thrones: Kingsroad is set throughout the series’ fourth season, revolving around a character created by the player who becomes the heir to House Tyre. Being part of a noble family from the North means players will engage in the political intrigues of Westeros while battling the White Walkers alongside iconic characters like Jon Snow. Character customization options allow players to choose from various roles, including Sellsword, Knight, and Assassin, resulting in distinct real-time combat experiences.
Despite being designed for mobile devices, the combat mechanics of Game of Thrones: Kingsroad resemble those found in games like God of War: Ragnarok, rather than standard mobile gaming fare. Netmarble’s latest title is indicative of a broader trend in mobile gaming, showcasing enhanced graphics and greater ambition; other recent titles like Monster Hunter Outlanders have followed suit. However, the implementation of microtransactions will ultimately determine the game’s success, and details on that front remain unavailable. Nonetheless, it’s clear that the mobile gaming landscape is evolving, offering more detailed gameplay options than in previous years.
During its presentation at The Game Awards, Game of Thrones: Kingsroad also confirmed its planned release year for several regions. The game is set to launch on iOS and Android in North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Oceania, and the Middle East sometime in 2025.
