The Astro Bot PlayStation 5 controller is certainly one of the most artistically distinct options among DualSenses available. Rather than just featuring a simple decal or a unique color, this design is much more elaborate. It boasts shiny blue stripes along the grips, intricate robotic design elements, and a prominent pair of eyes on the touchpad.
What stands out is how the little details enhance the overall design. Its blue and white color scheme is much more vibrant when compared to the standard black-and-white DualSense look. The light-blue touches on the face buttons and D-pad look especially vibrant under the clear plastic shell.
Another positive aspect is the thoughtful sculpting of the controller. It isn’t merely a re-colored version; the bottom features engravings that give it the appearance of a robot’s exterior. The blue grip patterns offer a refreshing deviation from the typical DualSense look, making it a standout piece on display. Plus, the back showcases a charming silhouette of Astro’s face as a nice finishing touch.
However, it’s worth noting that the real-life appearance deviates slightly from promotional images. The grips exhibit a more glossy finish than anticipated, with a sparkly blue texture that can give a somewhat plastic-like impression. I found that they easily showcased fingerprint smudges, a departure from other DualSenses I’ve used.
One of the larger downsides is the decal representing the eyes on the touchpad. While promotional images suggest they might glow, in reality, it’s simply a flat decal that appears a bit less premium compared to the controller’s overall quality.
Even with these minor criticisms, this special edition controller is delightful for both Astro Bot enthusiasts and collectors. It offers a unique appeal when compared to an ordinary DualSense, honoring what is quickly becoming one of PlayStation’s most beloved franchises.
Astro Bot is now available on the PS5, alongside the Astro Bot DualSense controller.
