Kojima Productions Surprises Fans with Death Stranding Director’s Cut Release on Xbox

Kojima Productions delighted gamers with an unexpected announcement on Thursday, revealing that Death Stranding Director’s Cut is now accessible on Xbox Series X/S and Windows PC. This release comes just a day before the game celebrates its five-year anniversary.

“I am thrilled to finally share that Death Stranding Director’s Cut will be available to Xbox players. A heartfelt thank you to all our fans who have remained engaged with us, as well as the entire Xbox community for their patience,” said Hideo Kojima, as highlighted by IGN. “Kojima Productions is dedicated to connecting even more players globally, so please stay tuned for future updates.”

Originally a PlayStation 4 exclusive in 2019, Death Stranding saw its Director’s Cut make its way to PC and PlayStation 5 before expanding to Apple devices across iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. Additionally, the game is set to launch on Amazon Luna on Thursday, allowing Prime subscribers to enjoy one month of free gameplay starting December 1.

This marks a significant step in the ongoing collaboration between Xbox and Kojima Productions. The studio’s next venture, titled OD, will be published by Xbox Game Studios. However, Kojima’s ties with Sony and PlayStation remain strong; he recently participated in Sony’s January State of Play event to announce his involvement in a stealth game called Physint in association with Sony Interactive Entertainment.

Currently, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is slated for a PlayStation 5 release in 2025. In a more recent update, it was disclosed that Kojima Productions has regained full IP rights for Death Stranding from 505 Games, likely due to the five-year mark since its initial launch. This could open the door for the sequel to be available on additional platforms. Fans are hopeful for a future release of Death Stranding Director’s Cut on the anticipated Switch 2, providing the opportunity to experience this unique and thought-provoking social connection game anywhere.
