James Bond may soon be stepping into the realm of the DC Universe. As reported by Deadline, Daniel Craig is being considered for the leading role in the upcoming DC Studios film Sgt. Rock, directed by Luca Guadagnino.
Although deals have yet to be finalized, both Craig and Guadagnino are associated with the project, which is still in its developmental infancy. This film marks a reunion for the two, who previously worked together on A24’s Queer, set to release later this year. The screenplay for Sgt. Rock is being penned by Justin Kuritzkes, known for his work on Challengers and Queer.
The character of Sgt. Franklin John Rock, created by Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert, made his debut in the 1959 DC Comics issue Our Army at War No. 83. As a World War II soldier, Rock is famed for his exceptional marksmanship, combat skills, and accuracy. He has also allied with various superheroes throughout his storied existence, though it remains unclear which specific comic issues will inform the narrative of Sgt. Rock.
Recently, Guadagnino was also attached to direct a reboot of American Psycho for Lionsgate, which was anticipated to be his next venture. However, it now appears he will tackle Sgt. Rock prior to moving forward with American Psycho.
Sgt. Rock is one of the most prominent projects in the new DC Universe created by James Gunn and Peter Safran. The DCU is organized into chapters, with God and Monsters kicking off phase one. The launch of the DCU is set for next month with the animated series Creature Commandos, debuting on Max December 5, 2024. The film segment of the DCU will commence with Gunn’s Superman, featuring David Corenswet in the leading role, scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
