OpenAI has introduced a new organizational feature called “Projects” for ChatGPT during the recent “12 Days of OpenAI” event. This feature allows users to manage their conversations and data more systematically.
“This is simply another tool for organization. I see these as intelligent folders,” explained Thomas Dimson from OpenAI during the presentation.
The Projects feature operates similarly to Claude’s version, allowing users to categorize documents and secure prior chats around a specific topic. For instance, if you’re using ChatGPT for research on a book you are writing, you can compile your existing notes and documents into a single Project folder, eliminating the need to re-upload them for each chat session.

Another use case shared during the live stream involved storing your home maintenance records and appliance details in a Projects folder. This setup allows you to quickly retrieve necessary information, such as when the water filter in your refrigerator needs replacing.
“Users can now manage their home projects with greater effectiveness. Our goal is to simplify how individuals access the information they require precisely when they need it,” Dimson added.
Unlike other features launched during the event, Projects began rolling out immediately during the live stream. It is currently available to ChatGPT Plus, Teams, and Pro users, with plans to extend access to Enterprise and Edu subscribers in early January, according to Kevin Weil, OpenAI’s chief product officer. “We will introduce it to our free users as soon as possible.”
The seasonal event is now halfway through, having already showcased the release of the Sora video generation engine, enhancements to the o1 reasoning model, a new $200 Pro subscription level, and various improvements to the Canvas feature.
This event will continue until the end of next week.
