Starting in 2025, Apple will transition all its iPhone models to organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays, phasing out the use of liquid crystal displays (LCDs) entirely.
The shift to OLED is driven by the technology’s ability to deliver more vibrant colors and sharper contrast, making it ideal for high-definition video content.
This transition will notably exclude Japan’s Sharp and Japan Display (JDI) from Apple’s supply chain. Approximately a decade ago, these companies together held a 70% share of the iPhone display market. However, their recent contributions have been limited to supplying LCDs for the iPhone SE, with no significant production of OLED displays for smartphones.
Reports indicate that Apple has already begun placing orders for OLED displays for its upcoming iPhone SE model from China’s BOE Technology Group and South Korea’s LG Display.
Apple first introduced OLED panels with the iPhone X in 2017 and has since incorporated OLED technology into its high-end models. The company also utilized OLED screens in the latest generation of iPad Pro models launched in May.
Representatives from Sharp, Japan Display, and LG Display have declined to comment on the matter. Apple has yet to respond to requests for comment.
