With the Apple SuperDrive recently selling out in the United States and then globally, there’s growing speculation (including insights from MacRumors) that this accessory, which has been around for 16 years, may not be making a comeback. Although Apple hasn’t issued any formal statements, it’s likely that many current users aren’t aware of its existence.

When the inaugural MacBook Air debuted in 2008, its standout feature was its incredibly slim and lightweight design. Achieving such a compact form factor necessitated the elimination of numerous ports, including the disc drive. This was considered a bold move at the time, leaving users to wonder how they would install software or create CDs for loved ones.

To provide users with the ability to play CDs and DVDs, Apple introduced a standalone disc drive known as the SuperDrive. It was equipped with a USB-A connector, which suited the technology of its release, although today it would require a USB-C to USB-A adapter for use. Furthermore, it lacks Blu-ray compatibility, making it quite outdated for current needs.

Over the years, USB standards have evolved significantly, and physical media like DVDs are increasingly seen as niche products amid the rise of streaming services and digital downloads. This shift likely contributed to Apple’s decision not to upgrade the SuperDrive to USB-C, ultimately leading to its removal from the Apple Store.

So here’s to the SuperDrive, a distinctive solution that played a part in the technological developments leading us to our current era.
