Actor Anthony Mackie recently spoke out about the backlash he received from his remarks about Captain America.
While promoting Captain America: Brave New World in Italy, Mackie stated that the character does not embody what “America” stands for.
“To me, Captain America represents a lot of different principles, and I don’t believe the term ‘America’ should be one of them,” Mackie explained in a video shared on social media. “It’s about a man who honors his commitments and embodies dignity, integrity, and reliability.”
Anthony Mackie explains what Captain America represents for him:
“Captain America symbolizes many concepts & I don’t think the term ‘America’ should be one of those. It’s about a man who keeps his word, who shows honor, dignity, and integrity.”

This clip went viral and sparked criticism from various social media users, who questioned Mackie’s assertion that his character doesn’t represent America. In response, he clarified his statements on Tuesday, affirming that he is a “proud American” and intended to convey that Captain America’s values resonate with people universally, not just those in the United States.
“Let me clarify: I’m a proud American and carrying the shield of such an iconic hero is a tremendous honor,” Mackie shared via Instagram Stories. “I have deep respect for all who have served our nation. Captain America embodies qualities that are relatable to individuals worldwide.”

Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, Mackie’s character, Sam Wilson, assumed the mantle of Captain America, carrying on the legacy of Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers. This transition was further explored in the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, where Sam grappled with his new role before ultimately embracing it.
As the new Captain America, Sam will face his first challenge in Captain America: Brave New World. After a meeting with U.S. President Thaddeus Ross, portrayed by Harrison Ford, Sam is tasked with uncovering a plot behind an international crisis and thwarting those responsible to avert global chaos. The film also features Danny Ramirez, Shira Haas, Xosha Roquemore, Carl Lumbly, Giancarlo Esposito, Liv Tyler, and Tim Blake Nelson among its cast.
Captain America: Brave New World is set to hit theaters on February 14, 2025.
