US Defense Secretary Urges Diplomatic Resolution Regarding Iran’s Nuclear Program
Tokyo, Japan – On March 30, 2025, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, during a joint news conference in Tokyo with Japan’s defense minister Gen Nakatani, emphasized the importance of seeking a diplomatic resolution to address concerns surrounding Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
Hegseth expressed optimism about the indirect discussions that began in Oman between US and Iranian officials. He described these initial talks as "productive" and considered them a "positive step" toward addressing the ongoing crisis.
During an appearance on CBS’s "Face the Nation," Hegseth reiterated President Donald Trump’s desire to avoid military intervention. "While we have demonstrated our capabilities to take decisive action if necessary, our primary aim is to ensure that Iran does not acquire nuclear weapons," he stated.
Trump, earlier this week, did not rule out the possibility of military action—working alongside Israel—if diplomatic efforts falter. "If military action is required, we are prepared to act, and Israel will play a leading role in that undertaking," he indicated.
The backdrop of this renewed urgency stems from Trump’s controversial decision in 2018 to withdraw the US from the multi-state nuclear agreement with Iran. Analysts warn that Iran might be nearing the capacity to produce a nuclear weapon, a claim that Tehran vehemently denies.
As discussions continue, Hegseth’s comments highlight the delicate balance between pursuing diplomacy and preparing for potential military action to mitigate the threat posed by Iran’s nuclear program.
