Option 2: Transitioning to Linux – A Beginner’s Guide

Linux Mint

If you’re fed up with the antics of Microsoft and are looking for a new path, consider making the switch to Linux. This open-source operating system has come a long way and can effortlessly run the majority of Windows applications and games using tools like Wine, Vulkan, and Proton.

It’s essential to understand that Linux is not a single entity with a uniform interface. Rather, it consists of numerous distributions—distinct versions of Linux that may employ their own graphical interfaces and tools for essential tasks like system updates.

To illustrate the wide array of choices, here are some of the prominent distributions: Arch, Debian, Fedora, Manjaro, Mint, Opensuse, Red Hat, and Ubuntu, to name just a few. The sheer number can be overwhelming, often leading those interested in trying Linux to feel anxious and back away.

For Windows users who are new to Linux, I recommend starting with Linux Mint. Its graphical interface resembles Windows, making it user-friendly right from the start without needing extensive adjustments. If it doesn’t meet your expectations, you can always explore another distribution.

As a precaution, I suggest installing Linux on a separate hard drive or SSD alongside your existing Windows installation to allow for easy switching between the two.

1. Downloading and Preparing the Installation Drive

Begin by downloading the latest .iso file of Linux Mint from the official website. Next, obtain and launch the Balena Etcher application. In the first step, select the downloaded .iso file and, in the second step, choose a connected USB drive of at least 4GB (ensure it doesn’t contain any important data). Then, click on Flash to overwrite the USB drive with the Mint installer.

2. Initiating the Installation

Restart your computer and press the designated key to access the boot menu before Windows starts. This key varies by manufacturer—commonly Esc, F2, or F10. Choose your USB stick and wait for Mint to load.

Once the desktop appears, double-click the Install Linux Mint icon to launch the installer. Your first task is to select your preferred language, followed by your keyboard layout. When prompted, make sure to check the box for “Install multimedia add-ons.”

Next, you’ll need to format the disk. Choose the option “Erase the disk and install Linux Mint,” and proceed. It’s crucial to select the correct disk for installation. If your Windows is on a larger SSD, such as 1TB, and you have a smaller SSD, like a 512GB one, simply select the 512GB drive. Click on Install Now followed by Continue.

While the system installs, you can set your time zone and create a username and password, along with a few other settings. Then, just relax and wait for the installation to complete.

3. Getting Acquainted with Linux Mint

Upon restarting your computer post-installation and logging in with your chosen password, you’ll be welcomed by the Mint desktop and a helpful initial program to guide you through. The First Steps tab offers quick access to vital features right away.

For instance, the Driver Manager can be helpful in identifying any drivers for your hardware that may not have been pre-installed. If you use an Nvidia graphics card, this step is essential, as proprietary drivers from Nvidia typically offer better performance than the generic open-source alternatives.

To install applications, utilize the Software Manager, and manage system updates through the Update Manager. However, for specific tasks, like installing Steam for gaming, it’s best to go directly to store.steampowered.com instead of relying on the app version in the Application Manager. Valve has streamlined the process, ensuring most modern games work seamlessly with Linux.

Feel free to explore! Linux Mint is designed in a way that’s familiar to Windows users, making it easier to navigate if you stay curious.

If you encounter challenges, a quick internet search can usually provide answers, along with various helpful forums, particularly on Reddit. Remember, since Mint is based on Ubuntu, you can often utilize Ubuntu support resources when specific Mint instructions are unavailable.

A Simpler Option: Chrome OS as ‘Linux Lite’

If diving into Linux seems daunting, Google’s Chrome OS presents a simplified alternative. Powering Chromebooks, this operating system is based on Linux but significantly streamlines user interaction, primarily via the Chrome browser.
