How to Restore Windows Security When It Won’t Start

Windows 11

Recently, many users have encountered an issue where “Windows Security” fails to start. Given that this tool is integral to Windows’ virus protection, it’s essential to resolve this problem promptly. To check if you can launch the tool, navigate through Windows logo > All apps > Windows Security. If it fails to open, try the following four steps:

1.Restart your computer: A simple but effective method in resolving numerous technical issues is to restart your system.

2. Look for updates: Access this feature via Windows logo > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates. If there are updates available, they will be installed automatically.

3. Inspect third-party antivirus programs: If you’re using a different antivirus software instead of Windows Defender, consider disabling it temporarily to see if it allows Windows Security to run. If this resolves the issue, reinstalling the conflicting antivirus software might be beneficial.

The SFC command scans and repairs corrupted Windows system files, which can help fix the issue of Windows Security not launching.

4. Repair Windows services: If the previous steps didn’t work, you may need to check the integrity of system files. Open the command prompt by typing cmd into the search bar, then right-click on Command Prompt > Run as administrator. In the command window, enter: sfc /scannow.

If you encounter an error, use this command next: Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth.

Running the DISM command with the “/Scan Health” option allows you to verify the integrity of the installed Windows image. Should it indicate that repairs are possible, execute this command: DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth.

5. Reset Windows: If all else fails, consider resetting your Windows installation. You can find more details in our guide: “Reasons to reset your Windows PC annually.”
