Google Chrome is stepping up its security game, making advancements that are becoming increasingly noticeable. The latest updates to the browser’s What’s New page showcase two features that, while not entirely new, are likely to be unfamiliar to many users.
The first enhancement is the simplified sharing of passwords within family groups. If you belong to a family group, you can easily share access credentials via the Google Password Manager’s Share feature. Although the What’s New page highlights the mobile interface, this functionality is also available on your PC. Simply navigate to Settings > Autofill and passwords > Google Password Manager. Select the password you wish to share, then click the Share button that appears. A small window will pop up, allowing you to choose from your family group members.

While sharing is restricted to family group members—a feature available at no cost—Google’s rationale seems sound: passwords are typically shared among family or those considered close. However, it would be beneficial if Google expanded sharing options to include other specific Google accounts, similar to how sharing works in Google Drive. There are instances when sharing credentials with someone outside of the family group is necessary, and with only six available spots, selecting members for sharing can be challenging.
The second update allows users to manually confirm the use of their saved payment information. Previously, Google required the CVC number from your credit card, the three or four-digit code used to verify ownership. Now, you can secure your payment details using your device’s biometrics or PIN instead. For PC users, simply go to Settings > Autofill and passwords > Payment methods and enable Manually verify every time you pay using autofill. This feature is also accessible via the mobile version of Chrome.
Web browsers have faced criticism in the past for their security measures, which are often seen as basic and less secure than dedicated password management tools. However, these two updates enhance their appeal. In reality, the best security tool is the one that suits your needs, and for many, that remains Google Chrome.
