If you’ve recently upgraded your HP Elitebook 840 G3 with an NVMe M.2 480GB SSD and it’s not being recognized by the BIOS, don’t worry—there are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the issue. Let’s walk through a simple guide to help you get your new SSD up and running.

First, confirm that you’ve properly installed the SSD. Sometimes, a loose connection can lead to detection issues. Here’s how to check:

  1. Power Down and Open Your Laptop: Ensure that your laptop is completely powered off. Disconnect any power source and remove the battery if possible.

  2. Access the SSD Slot: Locate the back panel of your laptop, usually held in place by screws. Carefully remove this panel to access the SSD slot.

  3. Check the SSD Installation: Make sure your NVMe SSD is securely seated in the M.2 slot. You might need to screw it in place. Reassemble the laptop after confirming the SSD is properly installed.

Once that’s done, it’s time to move on to BIOS settings:

  1. Boot Up and Enter BIOS: Power on your laptop and immediately press the appropriate key (often F10) to enter the BIOS setup menu.

  2. Check Storage Configuration: Look for a section related to storage or peripherals. Ensure that the SSD is listed here. If it’s not recognized, you may need to adjust some settings.

  3. Update BIOS: Since you’ve already updated to the latest BIOS version (v2.1), ensure that any settings regarding legacy support or NVMe support are enabled.

If the SSD still doesn’t appear in the BIOS, it may be a compatibility issue or a faulty SSD. Try these additional steps:

  1. Test the SSD in Another Device: If you have access to another computer compatible with M.2 NVMe drives, test the SSD there to see if it’s detected.

  2. Contact Support: If the SSD works in another laptop but still isn’t recognized in yours, consider reaching out to HP’s customer support for further assistance. There might be specific hardware compatibility issues we haven’t covered.

  3. Consider an Alternative Storage Option: If your SSD is confirmed faulty or incompatible, look into either replacing it with another NVMe SSD known to be compatible with your model or consider traditional SATA SSD options.

By following these steps, you should be able to troubleshoot and solve the SSD recognition problem. With a bit of patience and careful checking, you’ll have your HP Elitebook 840 G3 running smoothly with your new NVMe SSD in no time! If you have any further questions or need assistance, feel free to ask. Thank you!
