Pros:
- Innovative side brush design
- Outstanding mopping efficacy
- 120-day base station dust emptying capability
- Anti-tangle vacuum feature
Cons:
- Competing models offer greater suction power
- Lacks the self-cleaning function found on the Freo Z Ultra
Narwal stands out as a leading robot vacuum brand, with approximately 2 million units sold since 2016. Their models, like the Narwal Freo Z Ultra and Freo X Ultra, introduce innovative features that aren’t typically seen in the market. Instead of reinventing the wheel with the new Freo Z10, Narwal has effectively retained the standout features of its predecessor and packaged them into a more budget-friendly option.
While the Freo Z10 is not an entry-level vacuum, its $1,100 price tag represents excellent value for the capabilities it offers. Alongside impressive mopping abilities, it comes equipped with a robust base station for routine maintenance, generates 15,000 Pa of suction, and includes design enhancements to minimize tangles. Though some features were scaled back to reach this new price point, the Narwal Freo Z10 is an attractive choice for those looking for a high-end robot vacuum that saves both time and money.
A Cost-Effective Version of the Freo Z Ultra
When comparing the original Freo Z Ultra with the new Freo Z10, it’s tough to ignore the similarities. The Freo Z Ultra remains Narwal’s flagship due to its advanced baseboard cleaning technology and its electrolyzed water system, which helps sterilize its cleaning station. However, these two models share a number of core features.
Both vacuums come with a 2.5L dustbin that supports automated dust removal for up to 120 days, a mop that can lift 12mm when transitioning onto carpets, and compatibility with Alexa, Google Assistant, and Siri.
The Z10 boasts an additional 3,000 Pa of suction power compared to the Z Ultra—a considerable advantage given its lower price point.
While there are a few distinctions between the two models—such as the dirt detection and mopping systems—these differences do not significantly impact everyday use. The Z10 introduces newer MopExtend and Corner Reverse features for enhanced mopping, although there’s a slight reduction in mopping pressure from 12N in the Z Ultra to 8N in the Z10.
Nevertheless, testing has confirmed that the Freo Z10 is a powerhouse on hard floors, effectively removing dried stains and soaking up spills with ease. Watching the robot navigate is also a delight as it skillfully maneuvers around to reach corners and tackle tricky messes.
For carpet cleaning, the Freo Z10 performs best on low-pile carpets, as its 12mm mop lift may not be ideal for thicker carpets. Additionally, while 15,000 Pa suction power is impressive for this model, it doesn’t quite match some competitors offering up to 20,000 Pa.
Daily Cleaning, Obstacle Navigation, and Automated Maintenance
The primary function of a robot vacuum is to maintain cleanliness effortlessly. In this aspect, the Narwal Freo Z10 significantly succeeds. Though the base station may lack some advanced features of the premium Freo Z Ultra, it still manages essential self-maintenance tasks expected from a device that costs over $1,000.
For instance, the dustbin can accommodate debris for up to 120 days, surpassing most competitors that typically last a few months. The Z10 also offers adaptive hot water mop washing, hot air drying, auto detergent dispensing, and a thorough cleaning cycle that ensures the base station remains clean.
Dirty water is funneled into a designated reservoir while clean water is stored separately. Users will need to fill and empty these reservoirs periodically, but frequency will depend on individual usage and home size. If you run the Z10 a few times a week in a smaller space, you might go weeks without needing to manually intervene.
The base station is undoubtedly a highlight for the Freo Z10, but the vacuum itself is equally appealing. A variety of sensors can detect objects as small as 1 cm, clean within 5 mm of walls and furniture, and create a map of new areas in under 10 minutes. You can further enhance its functionality through the Narwal mobile app.
However, I found the onboard AI to be remarkably precise, allowing me to let it select the best power settings based on the current level of dirt in my home, rather than adjusting them manually.
In comparison to other robot vacuums I’ve tested, the Narwal Freo Z10 operates efficiently, often finishing a cleaning session about 10 minutes quicker than models like the Roborock Saros 10—though the Saros 10 does provide deeper cleaning capabilities, which is expected given its higher price. Still, for a model priced around $1,000, the Narwal Z10 ranks among the best. Its design also excels in preventing tangles, with a unique main brush and collapsible side brushes that pivot together to eliminate tangles automatically.
As with most robot vacuums, the Freo Z10 can struggle with cords, cables, and small objects. I never had to rescue it from getting stuck on furniture thanks to its precise sensors, but I did have to free it from charging cables under my desk more than once. If you have charging cables or similar items on the floor, it’s advisable to set a Restricted Zone or pick them up before starting a cleaning cycle.
Conclusion
The Narwal Freo Z10 takes the best elements from Narwal’s earlier models, streamlining its offerings while maintaining an attractive price point. Although it’s not the cheapest option, it delivers a fully automated cleaning experience that doesn’t compromise on premium features, making it a solid choice. While there is ample competition in the market, the Freo Z10 distinguishes itself with its sleek design, exceptional mapping capabilities, intelligent AI, and a mopping system that stands up well against the flagship Freo Z Ultra. For anyone looking for a robot vacuum around $1,000, the Freo Z10 is a compelling option.
