For years, many believed that choosing low-fat or fat-free dairy products was healthier because full-fat dairy contains saturated fat, which was thought to raise the risk of heart disease. Consequently, numerous families switched to products like skim milk, non-fat yogurt, and reduced-fat cheese.
Recently, however, scientists have started to question whether the cautious approach was too simplistic.
A new study from Canada indicates that eating full-fat dairy might not be as detrimental as previously thought, especially when included as part of a balanced diet.
Led by Professor Harvey Anderson from the University of Toronto, the research was published in the Journal of Nutrition. The study looked into whether consuming three servings of full-fat dairy daily would impact body weight, body fat, metabolism, cholesterol, and other health markers.
The study involved 74 overweight or obese adults who were randomly divided into three groups. One group followed a lower-dairy, calorie-restricted diet. The second group ate three servings of full-fat dairy daily while maintaining their usual calorie intake. The third group also consumed three daily servings of full-fat dairy but without strict calorie control. All participants were encouraged to follow Canada’s Food Guide to keep their diets balanced.
After 12 weeks, researchers compared health outcomes across the groups. They found no significant differences in weight, body composition, cholesterol, blood fats, or metabolic rate between those eating less dairy and those consuming full-fat dairy regularly. Importantly, increased dairy intake did not promote insulin resistance.
The study also revealed potential benefits. Those who ate more dairy gained higher levels of calcium, vitamin D, and protein—nutrients vital for healthy bones, muscles, and overall bodily functions. Additionally, improvements in blood pressure were observed, suggesting dairy’s benefits extend beyond simple calorie provision.
Professor Anderson emphasizes that these results support the idea that foods should be evaluated as whole entities rather than based on single nutrients. Dairy products contain a complex matrix of protein, vitamins, minerals, beneficial bacteria in some cases, and a unique physical structure called the dairy matrix.
This structure appears to influence how nutrients are digested and absorbed, which may explain why dairy sometimes exhibits different health effects than what you might expect from saturated fat alone.
This research has particular relevance for older adults, who often need more protein but tend to eat less food due to decreased energy demands. Full-fat dairy provides essential nutrients like calcium, vitamin D, and protein in small portions, making it a practical option for maintaining muscle strength and bone density.
However, the study has limitations, including its small sample size and relatively short duration. Longer-term, larger-scale research is necessary to fully understand the health impacts of regular full-fat dairy consumption.
Overall, the findings suggest that moderate intake of full-fat dairy can be incorporated into a healthy diet without negatively affecting weight, cholesterol, or metabolic health.
While it doesn’t imply everyone should switch to full-fat dairy, the study highlights the complexity of nutrition—focusing on whole foods may be more beneficial than avoiding entire categories based on one nutrient. Future dietary advice might prioritize overall food quality over simply reducing saturated fat intake.
