On April 25, the much-anticipated Days Gone Remastered will release, giving players the chance to upgrade from the PS4 version. This remaster is optimized for PS5 and features enhanced graphics specifically for the PS5 Pro. With improvements in performance and the inclusion of new features like a Horde Assault mode, this version represents the best way to experience the game. While there has been some backlash regarding Sony’s recent trend of remastering titles, many players will find this update worth it.
If you’re looking to upgrade, whether you own a digital or physical copy, there are a few steps you need to follow. Please note that all upgrade options will still require a $10 fee, a standard practice for PlayStation users. So if you’re eager to dive back in and possibly gear up for a potential Days Gone 2, here’s what you need to know.
How to Upgrade Digitally & Physically
A Bit More Complicated on the Physical Side
For those who purchased the digital version at launch for $60 in 2019 or snagged it later at a discount, upgrading is straightforward. Simply navigate to the PlayStation Store page for Days Gone Remastered, and if you own the PS4 version digitally, the $10 upgrade option will be available. However, the process is a bit trickier for physical copies.
Unlike other remastered titles such as Horizon Zero Dawn or The Last of Us Part 2, there’s no standalone physical release for Days Gone Remastered. The PS4 version is the only physical copy available.
To upgrade a physical copy, you’ll need to insert the PS4 disc into a PS5 with a disc drive. This will allow you to upgrade to the PS5 version for the $10 fee. However, keep in mind: upgrading in this manner effectively turns your PS4 disc into a license key for the PS5 version, meaning you’ll need to insert the disc every time you want to play.
No Upgrade for PS Plus Users
The Rough Road Ahead
While Days Gone is available on the PS4 and was even offered for free on PS Plus back in April 2021, this version does not qualify for the $10 upgrade to the remastered edition. If you claimed the game during that period and have an active PS Plus subscription, you can still play the PS4 version, but you won’t be able to upgrade to the remaster.
Some users may find that purchasing an old PS4 physical copy at a local shop and upgrading it is a more affordable route than the $50 tag for Days Gone Remastered. This option will require that you own a PS5 or PS5 Pro with a disc drive.
In contrast to Xbox Game Pass, which offers upgrades between $10 to $20 for Deluxe Editions, PlayStation has followed a similar method in the past with titles like Horizon Zero Dawn. However, the approach for Days Gone feels a bit different. If you secured Days Gone through PS Plus, seeking out an inexpensive used PS4 disc will likely be your best bet for the upgrade.
