World of Warcraft offers an endless array of customization options, with everything from fiery hammers to shoulder pads brimming with earthly energy. Among these choices are some legendary appearances, reserved for the most committed players. One standout item is the Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker, a unique two-bladed sword formerly held by Thunderaan, the Prince of Air. This exceptional weapon enhances the look of any character.
Embarking on the quest to obtain Thunderfury can be lengthy and largely dependent on luck, but we have a helpful guide to simplify the process.
How to Acquire the Bindings of the Windseeker
This quest can be undertaken by any class, but only hunters, paladins, rogues, death knights, and warriors will unlock the achievement ‘Did Someone Say…’ when they wield Thunderfury.
To begin your quest for this legendary sword, you need to secure both the left and right Bindings of the Windseeker. They drop from two bosses in the Molten Core raid: Garr, who drops the left binding, and Baron Geddon, who drops the right. These bindings can drop on any raid difficulty, but they only have about a four percent drop chance, meaning you may need some luck on your side.
The Molten Core is located in the Burning Steppes of the Eastern Kingdoms. For Alliance players, the quickest route is to fly directly from Stormwind. For Horde players, take the zeppelin from Stranglethorn and then fly over. Once you reach the Burning Steppes, head to Blackrock Mountain, the large edifice to the northwest, using the main entrance.
Once inside, you’ll spot a structure surrounded by lava straight ahead with a chain attached. Fly over to speak with the NPC named Lothos Riftwalker, who will teleport you into the raid.
Inside the raid, simply follow the path down to take on Garr at the end of the room, and then turn left to find Baron Geddon patrolling the area. If luck isn’t on your side, you might have to run the raid multiple times to collect both bindings.
How to Begin the Quest Chain
After obtaining the bindings, head to Highlord Demitrian in Silithus, located at coordinates 29.6, 10.6, on the summit of The Crystal Vale. He will assign you your first quest, Examine the Vessel, which requires using an item he provides.
If Highlord Demitrian isn’t visible, speak to Zidormi at Valor’s Rest to revert to a previous time.
Next, he will give you the quest Thunderaan the Windseeker, where you’ll need to return with both bindings, one Essence of the Firelord, and ten Enchanted Elementium Bars. The Essence of the Firelord is an easy find, as it drops guaranteed from Ragnaros in the Molten Core raid while this quest is active, but gathering the Enchanted Elementium Bars is a bit more complicated.
How to Obtain Enchanted Elementium Bars
There are two main ways to gather the bars you need: crafting them yourself or purchasing them from the Auction House, each method having its own costs.
If you choose to craft them, first ensure you have a character on the same realm with a 300 Classic Mining Skill. Next, your character must acquire the Elementium Bar Recipe, which drops from Master Elemental Shaper Krixix in Blackwing Lair with a 26 percent drop rate.
After, you need to gather the necessary materials. Below is a list of what you need and how to obtain each item:
Material |
How to Acquire |
1x Elementium Ingot |
Rare drop from Master Elemental Shaper Krixix and Blackwing Technicians in Blackwing Lair. Buy from Auction House for about 25 to 100 gold each. |
1x Fiery Core |
Dropped by Baron Geddon and occasionally from Flameguards, Firewalkers, Firelords, and Molten Destroyers in the Molten Core raid. Purchase from Auction House for about 25 to 100 gold each. |
3x Elemental Flux |
Available from any Blacksmithing Trainer/Supplies NPC for three gold. |
10x Arcanite Bar |
Crafted from 1x Arcane Crystal and 1x Thorium Bar. Requires the Transmute Arcanite recipe on an alchemist character. Available at the Auction House for around 100 to 200 gold each. |
If crafting isn’t your preference, you can buy Enchanted Elementium Bars from the Auction House, but expect to pay around 2,000 gold each.
How to Obtain the Thunderfury Blessed Blade of the Windseeker
Once you have all the needed materials, return to Highlord Demitrian and turn in the quest Thunderaan the Windseeker. He will summon Thunderaan, and once you defeat him, he will drop the Dormant Wind Kissed Blade.
Bring this blade back to Highlord Demitrian, and you will claim your legendary weapon.
