In the Until Dawn Remake, there are eight characters who can survive the horrors that unfold. Throughout the ten chapters of the game, your decisions play a critical role in determining their fates. Some choices require quick reflexes, while others call for more strategic thinking. Although achieving a perfect ending where all characters survive is the best outcome, various story paths and dialogues can emerge based on who has perished along the way. This adds value to replaying the game multiple times to explore all possible endings.
The remake introduces several updates compared to the original version of Until Dawn. FireSprite is also developing a sequel, marking ten years since the first release. As a result, some narrative elements from the original have been woven into this new edition. The gameplay mechanics remain largely unchanged, so returning players will enjoy new insights and scenes while utilizing familiar strategies to assist the main characters. New players will find the experience fully accessible, even if they have never played the game from 2015.
Dependent on Others – Saving Jessica, Matt, and Ashley
Characters at High Risk If Not Managed
Among the characters, Jessica, Matt, and Ashley are the most vulnerable to the decisions made by others in Until Dawn. While they have some control over their destinies, this is mostly as a backup when another character has met an unfortunate fate. In a flawless playthrough, Jessica cannot be directly controlled and relies on Mike and Matt for her safety.
Choices to Preserve Jessica
Jessica is one of the initial victims in Until Dawn, and for a significant part of the story, many characters believe she has perished. Players must wait until Chapter 9 to discover that she is, in fact, alive.

Choices to Save Matt
Matt’s decisions span several chapters in Until Dawn. One pivotal choice occurs in Chapter 6, where he must take the flare gun. Without this crucial item, Matt’s chances of survival significantly diminish based on his other choices.

Critical Decisions – Saving Emily and Chris
Responsible for Their Own Fates
Emily and Chris hold significant power over their own fates and have numerous opportunities to secure their survival. While they can still fall victim to others, any such demise typically stems from previous misjudgments in Until Dawn. Successfully completing quick-time events without errors can help you avoid the direst choices.
Choices to Preserve Emily
Emily faces some challenging quick-time events in the game. These events are often more demanding than those in The Quarry, so it’s important to focus, as her untimely death can occur without warning.
YouTuber GetRektNoob highlighted the differences between the chase sequences in the original and the remake of Until Dawn. While the mechanics stay largely intact, the on-screen prompts are less conspicuous. It’s advisable to become familiar with the controller layout instead of relying solely on the on-screen indications.

Choices to Save Chris
Chris and Ashley share a romantic tension early in Until Dawn. However, if this bond is betrayed, Ashley might inadvertently lead to Chris’s demise through inaction. Even if their relationship remains strong, Ashley’s choices can still impact Chris’s fate.
Despite Chris’s involvement in Chapter 10, no choices need to be made here. He will automatically escape at the beginning of the final act. If you want him to die, your last chance to do so arises in Chapter 9.

Almost Invulnerable – Saving Mike, Sam, and Josh
Plot Armor Limits Choices
In Until Dawn, Mike, Sam, and Josh are the three main characters whose survival is heavily protected by plot armor. You can make poor decisions early in the game, and they will still be safe for a majority of the playthrough. It’s only towards the conclusion that they can become vulnerable to death.
Choices to Preserve Mike
Similar to Jessica, Mike has no pivotal decisions in a flawless playthrough. His survival hinges on the choices made by Sam. You only control Mike directly if Sam meets her demise.

Mike |
If Sam has passed away but Mike managed to break the light bulb, flip the switch. Otherwise, Mike cannot survive. |
Choices to Save Sam
Sam is the most durable character in Until Dawn. She has minimal means of dying, ensuring her survival in most scenarios. As a result, new players may find the game easier thanks to her resilience.

Sam |
Complete all stand still events except for the first. Note: failing the first will instead take out Emily or Ashley. |
Never allow a decision timer to expire, or Sam risks getting stabbed by a Wendigo. |
Josh is not a directly playable character in Until Dawn. His survival is dictated solely by Sam’s actions during the final chapter. As Mike charges through a waterfall, instead of following him, you should climb the ledge on the left to discover Hannah’s Scrawled Journal. Reading this journal before finding Josh will ultimately save his life.
