Sony has made a subtle change to the packaging of the PS5 console, which has already upset some gamers who realized what it indicates. Despite the backlash, the company has confirmed it will stick to its decision to stop producing physical game discs.
Recently, it was spotted by Twitter user Behind the Games that PS5 consoles are now being shipped in boxes with a label warning customers that, beginning January 2028, new PlayStation games will no longer be available on disc.
The notice states: “IMPORTANT NOTICE: Starting in January 2028, new PlayStation game releases will be sold exclusively through the PlayStation Store and select retailers in digital format. Games released before January 2028 will remain compatible with this console.”
As expected and highlighted in the tweet above, Sony has been planning this shift for several years, largely due to decreasing physical sales. It’s clear that the numbers aren’t favoring discs, with all major publishers confirming that most of their game sales are now digital.
