Wagnas serves as one of the primary villains in Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of The Seven. The game’s non-linear nature means he can be encountered as either an early or a late-game boss. However, Wagnas has only two difficulty levels: normal and hard. If you happen to face him too soon, he can be quite challenging, but it’s also wise not to leave him for last since he will have increased hit points, defenses, and unexpected abilities.
Wagnas is the final boss you will face in the Flying Castle of Romancing SaGa 2. To access this location, you first need to defeat the leader of the Black Legion at Castle Hakuro. You’ll also need a way to fly, which can be acquired by either recruiting the initial character Iris along with Windie or using one of her class successors. Alternatively, you can obtain a flying machine from the NPC Hiraga in Somon. Whichever method you choose will enable you to confront Wagnas in his lair.
How to Overcome the Black Legion in Castle Hakuro
Eliminate Wagnas’ Forces First
Initially, Wagnas will not be present at his base, the Flying Castle. Instead, you must eliminate the Black Legion and its leader. Although the Black Legion appears to be skeletal, they are actually humanoid characters clad in armor. They are backed by two physical-damage dealing Mystics. Focus on the Black Legion first while keeping your defenses high and healing your team as needed. You should be able to take them down in approximately five to six turns in Romancing SaGa 2.
After defeating the Black Legion, Wagnas will make a brief appearance to taunt your party before escaping. Your next task will be to track him down to the Flying Castle, but keep in mind that you may not have gained access to flying capabilities just yet.
How to Reach Wagnas in the Flying Castle
Similar to other quests, flying access in Romancing SaGa 2 is adjustable and can be pursued during different game eras based on what you have completed. One way to gain flying capability is by completing the Bard Quest and recruiting your first character Iris, Windie. You’ll need to locate a wandering bard in various spots and speak to people in this order:
- The Bartender in Yuyan
- The Boatman in Moulie
- The patron sitting at the front table in the bar at Tsukijima
- The Salamander with the Bard’s guitar in Zemio
- The little girl running around Hofah
- The boy singing a song in Nomad Village
- The little girl in Ostro
- The Mole with the Bard’s conga drum in Termite Den
- The little boy in Teretuva
- The Boatman in Atlanticus
- The elderly lady in Toba
- If you’ve had the Corsair class unlocked for five in-game years, the Bard’s bassoon can be found in Garon
- The little boy in Saigo Village, who will guide you to the Bard’s flute
- The children in Avalon, who will direct you to the Bard’s horn
Once you have all five instruments, travel to the top of Mount Chikapa and hold a concert to summon Windie. After your performance, she’ll invite you to visit the entire Iris village, and upon arriving, Windie will join your party, allowing you to access the Flying Castle.
If you’d rather not explore the world extensively, you can obtain a flying machine from NPC Hiraga. Complete various quests given by NPCs in the towns of Yuyan and Liangshan, then head to Somon and ask Hiraga to construct the flying machine. Keep in mind that if your Emperor is of the mage class, they won’t be able to pilot the machine. You will need to either abdicate or use the Iris method.
How to Defeat Wagnas
Prepare a Strong Team
Before you approach the Flying Castle to face Wagnas, ensure your party is well-equipped. If necessary, you may need to exit the dungeon to make adjustments. It’s crucial to note that Wagnas exclusively uses fire and magic attacks, lacking any physical assaults. This means you’ll want to come equipped with:
- One Salamander – a class that starts fully immune to fire damage when unlocked
- One Moleman – which offers high status effect resistance
- One Nereid – with substantial fire resistance as well as status effect protection
- One or two Court Mages (of each gender) – who can achieve immunity to magic attacks
- An optional Freelance Mage – quick but less powerful
Adjust your team as necessary to fit your current Emperor. If they are not well-suited, consider abdicating the throne for a more fitting character. If you are using the Final Emperor, they should be powerful enough for your last slot. Always seek to learn new arts by utilizing the same methods introduced in past SaGa games.
You can witness a YouTube gameplay from Atilatis, who tackled Wagnas using a female Court Mage as their main character. Their approach leaned toward high offense rather than absolute invincibility. With sufficient damage output, surviving the encounter is certainly achievable.
Understanding Wagnas’ Power Levels
Wagnas features a basic power level along with a more potent alternate form. The version you face is influenced by the average hit points of your party in Romancing SaGa 2. If your party’s total reaches 700 HP, Wagnas will consistently be stronger and possess enhanced hit points and damage output. He may even switch to more light-based moves. Generally, if you’re already on your sixth generation, you’ll face the tougher version of Wagnas.
Strategy for Combat
Wagnas employs a diverse range of magic but tends to rely heavily on his most powerful attack, Firestorm. This move inflicts significant fire damage; however, with the right setup featuring the Salamander and Court Mages, they will be completely immune. To safeguard the rest of your group, bolster your fire and magic resistance as much as possible.
During the fight, Wagnas will summon two minions to assist him, which should be eliminated quickly, preferably with area-effect attacks, as they can inflict considerable damage.
Streamline your focus on direct weapon damage, healing your party, and maintaining fire resistance. If you’re suitably prepared, Wagnas should be defeated in around 10 rounds or fewer. If this encounter marks the fifth hero you’ve overcome, be ready for a rematch with Kzinssie—a challenge that is anything but straightforward, laying down one of the ultimate tests of Romancing SaGa 2.
