Lava appears in Hello Kitty Island Adventure, mainly around Mount Hothead. While it’s not widespread across the island, you’ll encounter lava-filled rocky areas occasionally, especially when trying to reach the Caldera.
Instead of accidentally falling into the lava and being returned to where you started, consider acquiring the ability to swim in it! Gaining this skill isn’t easy, but it certainly makes exploring more manageable. In this guide, we’ll discuss how to swim in lava in Hello Kitty Island Adventure.
What Skill Allows You to Swim in Lava?
Instead of using a potion to swim in lava, you’ll receive this ability through a companion. When you achieve friendship level 19 with Retsuko, she grants you the Hot Stuff ability, allowing you to swim in lava.
Friendship level 19 is quite a journey, so be sure to give Retsuko gifts every day. Her preferred gift is the Volcanic Guitar, made from two Ingots, two Sparks, and one Mechanism. This recipe can be obtained from Tophat once you reach friendship level four with him.
Upon reaching friendship level 19 with Retsuko, ask her to tag along and you’ll automatically acquire the ability.
Upon reaching friendship level 17 with Retsuko, you’ll unlock a quest entitled Swimming Lessons. Although the title might be misleading, completing this quest isn’t necessary for learning to swim in lava with Retsuko. Nevertheless, we recommend doing it as you’ll earn a cute little swimsuit.
Why Swim in Lava?
If you lack this ability, falling into lava will send you back to your previous spot on land. Navigating around areas filled with small rocks over a lava pool can be tricky, and it’s especially challenging on the mobile version of the game where precision is key.
When you activate this ability, you can swim in the lava, gliding alongside Retsuko just like you would in water. There’s no time limit; you can explore at your leisure and even capture some photos.
Keep in mind that not all lava is swimmable. Specifically, the lava in the Red Hot Rampage minigame doesn’t allow swimming; falling into this will still return you to your previous location.
In general, swimming in lava is a great way to speed things up. Instead of crossing the lava bridge that moves across the lava from the Caldera, just swim through! This skill also proves useful during challenge courses like Hothead Hot Foot, which is set over lava.
