In many of the dungeons found in Mandragora, players will encounter Metroidvania-style puzzles that can’t be solved until later in the game. This design encourages you to revisit earlier areas with newfound abilities and tools, and one of the most useful tools for this is the grappling hook. This unique item allows you to quickly traverse large distances, provided there are grappling points nearby.
Fortunately, you won’t miss collecting the grappling hook during your adventure. However, it is acquired in the latter part of the game, and using it can be a bit challenging. Here’s how to unlock this handy tool and a quick overview of how to use it.
Unlocking the Grappling Hook
The grappling hook becomes available in the latter half of your adventure. To unlock it, you must complete the quest titled “Find a Friend.” This quest begins in the Braer Castle dungeon, which serves as the culminating dungeon for the second act of the story.
In the castle, navigate to the Rooftop Terrace at the top of the dungeon. There, you will meet a character named Killashandra, who will inform you about her missing friend, Rikter. Your mission is to locate him.
Rikter can be found at the southern end of Lochmuir Village. When you arrive, descend two levels and unlock the door on an isolated platform using the boathouse key you received from Killashandra. Once inside, you’ll find a platform to cross the treacherous waters below. After making it across, defeat the boss waiting for you, then examine Rikter’s remains before heading back to Killashandra. In gratitude, she will reward you with the grappling hook.
Using the Grappling Hook
Now that you’ve got your grappling hook, it’s time to put it to use. When you’re near a grappling point, jump and hold down the dodge button. This action will fire the grappling hook in the direction you’re facing. If it connects, you’ll swing across and land safely on the other side.
Some grappling anchors will be located on vertical surfaces. In such cases, continue holding the dodge button to climb the wall using the grappling hook. Mastering both techniques is essential for reaching the end of Braer Castle and confronting the final boss.
