Hades 2 is now available in Steam Early Access, providing an exciting glimpse into the ongoing work by Supergiant Games on this unexpected sequel. Throughout its history, Supergiant has never released a direct follow-up, transitioning from titles like Bastion to Transistor and Pyre before finally arriving at Hades. Given the massive success of the original, it’s not surprising to see the studio returning to this beloved universe.
Hades is widely regarded as one of the top roguelikes of the modern era, and we anticipate that Hades 2 will earn a spot on similar lists when it officially launches. While we’re still awaiting a confirmed release date for the final version and details about console editions, be sure to scroll down for the latest tips, guides, and news on Hades 2.
Hades 2 Early Access Review
GamesRadar+ reviewed Hades 2 in May 2024, providing an early impression of the roguelike. They stated, “There’s still some polish needed, but given the significant expansion from Hades 2 compared to the first game, that’s totally understandable. This is a highly ambitious roguelike featuring an enhanced progression system and a richer narrative, retaining the original’s challenge and world charm, making it an impressive success in early access.”
Hades 2 Release Date
As of now, Supergiant has not yet announced a final release date for Hades 2, although it did launch into Steam Early Access on May 6, 2024. This phase aims to provide players a sneak peek into the final game and assist the developers in testing the combat and difficulty systems. Stay tuned for more updates on the anticipated release of Hades 2 for PS5 and Xbox Series X.
Hades 2 Console Release
With Hades 2 debuting in Early Access on PC on May 6, there’s currently no information regarding a console release. Supergiant spent two years refining the original game during its Early Access phase before it was launched on the Switch in 2020, followed by versions for Xbox and PlayStation a year later. While waiting three years for Hades 2 may seem unbearable, it’s worth noting that the game is entering Early Access in a significantly more polished state than its predecessor did back in 2018. You can refer to our Hades 2 roadmap for more insight into what’s still in development.
Does this mean that Supergiant might not need as much time to finish it this time around? Only time will tell, but you can check our guide for more details on the Hades 2 console launch timeline.
Hades 2 Protagonist
The central character of Hades 2 is Melinoë, the immortal princess of the Underworld. Much like Zagreus, she isn’t venturing alone. Players will encounter various characters throughout her adventure, including the helpful Arachne and the god-in-training Icarus.
Supergiant has truly excelled in presenting a diverse cast of gods and boons, both familiar and new. As the game evolves during Early Access, players can expect even greater enhancements. For instance, reaching the surface has not yet been completed in Hades 2; however, getting close is possible after defeating Eris, Strife Incarnate. If you’re having difficulty with this, check out our guide on how to defeat Eris in Hades 2.
Hades 2 Story
In terms of the storyline, players will be stepping into Princess Melinoë’s shoes as she battles through locations like Erebus, Oceanus, the Mourning Fields, and ultimately Tartarus. In this thrilling journey, Melinoë faces her grandfather, Chronos, the Titan of Time who has seized control of the House of Hades, subjecting its inhabitants to harsh rule.
Hades 2 is a direct sequel to the original game, taking place sometime after Zagreus’ adventures in the Underworld. Set amidst Greek mythology, the game focuses on Chronos, the infamous Titan of Time, known for being a “wicked father” to Hades and his siblings. Having escaped from his Underworld prison, Chronos now wages war against Olympus. While Hades 2 is a follow-up to the first game, Supergiant reassures players that prior knowledge of Hades or Greek mythology is unnecessary to enjoy this sequel.
Hades 2 Bosses
Hades 2 includes a variety of bosses throughout its multiple locations, including those found on the surface and within Tartarus. To progress from Erebus to Oceanus, you will need to defeat Hecate. After battling your way through a host of aquatic enemies, you’ll face the formidable Scylla and her melodic Sirens. And who awaits you as the boss in the Mourning Fields? That would be your old acquaintance, Cerberus.
Melinoë’s chances of defeating these bosses can be greatly improved by effectively utilizing Hades 2’s Arcana cards. Additionally, the gear you choose will play a crucial role. As in the original game, selecting the right weapon in Hades 2 can set the stage for your success (or failure) before you even launch into a run. Early Access features four weapons: the Moonstone Axe, Witch’s Staff, Sister Blades, Umbral Flames, and Argent Skull. You’ll find that trial and error will be your best strategy in mastering these choices. And don’t forget Schelemaus, the bearded skeleton resembling a familiar face from Zagreus’s past.
