The Ishibutai Kofun in Assassin’s Creed Shadows is situated in Yamato, to the southeast of the Asuka Rocks Basin. To enter this Kofun, you’ll need to use Naoe since Yasuke is too large to navigate the main entrance. The layout of the Ishibutai Kofun is relatively simple, but there are parts that might cause some confusion. A good understanding of Naoe’s controls will be essential for successfully exploring the Kofun, and you’ll need to time your grappling hook swings accurately. Overall, the Kofun is quite manageable.
Upon completing the Ishibutai Kofun, you’ll earn one of the legendary trinkets in AC Shadows: Masakado’s Vengeance. This gift grants Naoe an additional +1% damage for each unspent Mastery Point. There’s also a version of this trinket available as an amulet for Yasuke, which you can earn through the main story as part of the Templar questline. The trinket’s effect is among the most powerful in the game, especially because there are numerous ways to accumulate Mastery Points. Therefore, it’s definitely worth exploring the Ishibutai Kofun when you come across it, allowing you to maximize the benefits from any unspent Mastery Points in your skill trees.
Ishibutai Kofun Walkthrough in AC Shadows
Get Ready with Your Grappling Hooks
Upon entering the Ishibutai Kofun in AC Shadows, the pathway is quite clear. You will jump between some rock pillars and perform a grappling hook jump to the opposite side of the room. After crossing another set of pillars, you’ll enter a large area with two grappling hook points. I made the mistake of sliding down a ramp, but don’t worry—you can quickly run back up and retry your grappling hook swing if you start sliding again. You’ll move past more platforms and swings before ducking through a tunnel.
Inside the room with the large tree, you’ll need to slide down the slope a bit to hit the grappling point before swinging across. After swinging to the second hook, you’ll spot a platform ahead, but you won’t be able to throw your hook from there. You will need to slide down halfway before reaching the grappling point again, and the jump may require some finesse. If you fall, don’t forget you can run back up and have another go at it.
Once you’ve reached the center platform with the tree, swing over to the wooden planks and navigate to the last grappling hook swing. From there, climb up the cave wall to the top, where you’ll find a path leading to the legendary chest. Opening this chest will reward you with the Masakado’s Vengeance trinket, a Knowledge Point, and some extra experience points.
Rewards from Ishibutai Kofun & Their Effects
The Power of Masakado’s Vengeance is Worth the Effort
Masakado’s Vengeance is a legendary trinket that works wonderfully for any Naoe build in AC Shadows. It’s especially beneficial if you tend to forget to check your unspent Mastery Points or if you favor using just one weapon. This trinket’s effect boosts your damage by 1% for every unspent Mastery Point, with no visible cap that I’ve noticed. Additionally, unlocking this trinket gives you access to the engraving that enhances damage based on unspent Mastery Points, which you can apply to another trinket if you wish.
Be strategic with your Mastery Points—don’t fill out every ability in a tree since you can only equip two at a time.
You’ll also find an Epic piece of equipment upon entering the Kofun—the Revenge of the Onryo Robe. This is a decent piece if you know how to use the Oni’s Fury Trinket effect to your advantage, which enhances damage for equipped non-legendary gear.
Consider engraving the Oni’s Fury trinket with your buff for unspent Mastery Points to maximize the benefits of both effects. Regardless of whether you opt for Masakado’s Vengeance, having that engraving available will be useful, since you’ll likely revisit and adjust your Assassin’s Creed Shadows build multiple times.
