Finding Every High Dragon in Dragon Age: The Veilguard

Eight High Dragons Await

In Dragon Age: The Veilguard, there are a total of eight high dragons, each located in different areas and possessing unique strengths, weaknesses, and rewards. While these high dragons are primarily optional bosses, many players choose to confront them for additional experience points, bragging rights, and loot. Locating all eight is an adventure in itself.

Here’s a brief list of each high dragon and their precise locations:

High Dragon Location
Beartooth Vyrantus Minrathous
Corius the Icetalon Treviso
Fangscorcher Deep Woods in Arlathan Forest
Kataranda the Stormrider Rivaini Coast
Kaltenzahn Sharksmouth Caves
The Formless One Necropolis Halls
Mythal’s Retribution Converged City of the Crossroads
Revenant Dragon Beacon Island

Some of these high dragons can be accessed through the main story progression, while others become available through side quests. Confronting all high dragons isn’t necessary for completing the main storyline, but mastering the art of dragon hunting offers valuable experience and leads to achievements, like the coveted Bringing Down the Sky achievement.

Strategies for Defeating Each High Dragon

Understanding Their Strengths and Weaknesses

Each high dragon presents its own challenges with specific strengths and vulnerabilities. For instance, if you encounter an ice-using dragon, fire attacks will typically yield the best results. Observing the dragons closely, understanding their attack patterns, and looking for moments of weakness are key strategies for success.

Seartooth Vyrantus and Corius the Icetalon

Seartooth Vyrantus is among the first high dragons players will face, becoming accessible as part of the central narrative. During the quest involving the Elven Gods, players must choose to protect either Treviso or Minrathous, with this decision impacting which dragon they encounter.

If Minrathous is chosen, players will confront Seartooth Vyrantus, while protecting Treviso will pit them against Corius. Though players can only face one, neither battle is strictly necessary for the Bringing Down the Sky achievement.

These two high dragons have contrasting elemental powers: Seartooth breathes fire and is vulnerable to ice, while Corius wields ice and takes extra damage from fire. Initially, both dragons will escape the fight, allowing for a second encounter in the quest titled Fire and Ice.

Fangscorcher

You’ll kick off the Dragon King storyline when facing Fangscorcher. This fire-breathing dragon is known for its aggression, so speed will be your ally during this battle. Weak points to target are its legs and underbelly.

To embark on this quest, players should visit the Lighthouse after completing Taash’s introductory mission. Speaking with Taash will initiate the quest titled Slaying the Fangscorcher, setting the stage for the impending challenge in the Deep Woods of Arlathan Forest.

Kataranda the Stormrider

Kataranda is introduced as part two of Taash’s companion quest. After defeating Fangscorcher, players will unlock the quest leading to this battle, where lightning-based attacks dominate. The arena is set on the beach of Rivaini Coast, marking your first encounter with a lightning-wielding high dragon.

Pay attention to the dry patches of land during this fight, as both the ocean and Kataranda’s electric attacks can be dangerous.

Kaltenzahn

The hunt for Kaltenzahn marks the final encounter for Taash and comes after defeating Kataranda. Return to the Lighthouse to unlock the quest titled Lair of the Dragon King and venture back to the Sharksmouth Caves. Kaltenzahn is another ice-type dragon, where fire attacks will prove most effective.

The Formless One

This level 40 electric dragon is exceptionally tough and requires players to unlock the side quest Pinnacle of its Kind before facing it. Players must also obtain Emmrich as a companion, who will initiate this quest. The Formless One can summon skeletons through its necromancer abilities, meaning necrotic attacks are advisable.

Mythal’s Retribution

Choosing to engage with the lightning-based Mythal offers a unique battle that could lead to the secret ending of Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Alternatively, opting for a peaceful resolution grants the Clear Minds and Open Hearts achievement. Players must make a decisive choice as both paths yield different outcomes.

Revenant Dragon

As a level 50 powerhouse, the Revenant Dragon is the final high dragon, known to demand multiple quests to unlock, starting with The Heart of Corruption. This heavyweight uses a mix of elemental attacks—from ice to fire and electric. Utilize necrotic damage for effective counter-strategies against this formidable foe.

With all eight high dragons detailed — including their locations and weaknesses — players can tailor their approach. Whether taking on every dragon or just the essential ones, the quest for the Bringing Down The Sky achievement might entice many into the exhilarating world of dragon slaying.
