As you journey through Luma Island, you’ll likely encounter numerous ruins scattered across different areas. If you’ve taken the time to explore these ruins, you may have noticed a rather ominous locked door in each one, indicated by a skull symbol.
Regularly, these doors can’t be opened. There’s no way to break through with a whip, flip a switch, or use a pickaxe. However, if you’ve decided to pursue the Archaeologist profession and have Arianne as your mentor, you’ll gain the ability to unlock these enigmatic doors, revealing pathways filled with mysteries and ancient tales.
What Is The Archaeologist Profession?
The Archaeologist profession is one of seven options you can select at the Town Hall after finishing the tutorial or obtaining your first profession. It’s distinctively marked with three skulls, setting it apart from the regular difficulty stars.
You have the option to hold multiple professions simultaneously, even all seven if you wish. However, keep in mind that acquiring each profession permit increases the cost in Gold.
This escalated cost is attributed to the challenging task of collecting Broken Relics during your quests. Not only can you lose these relics while gathering them, but if you want to craft the restored item multiple times, you’ll have to acquire them again after a certain point.
Broken Relics are considered fragile items. Once picked up from any Archaeologist-only rooms in the temples, these items will show up in a Lost On Death item menu, which stays active only while you’re inside the temple.
When you die and return to the entrance of a room, you’ll lose a life. Running out of lives means the Broken Relics will be destroyed, and you’ll need to reclaim them from the Archaeologist Room once more.
However, minor incidents, like being attacked by a Bat and losing a few items, don’t count as deaths in this context, nor do they affect the status of the Broken Relics. Deaths that do count against your lives include:
- Being harmed by any type of temple trap, such as a Fire-breathing Statue or Rolling Saw.
- Taking damage from specific enemies, such as a Saw Plant in the Jungle Temples.
If you leave the temple at any time, you’ll forfeit the items in your Lost On Death menu and will have to obtain the relics again.
The positive aspect is that each temple room has its own life count. If you enter the next room after, for example, losing two lives to different traps, your life count will reset.
Once you finish and exit the temple through the last room without losing the Broken Relics, you’ll receive a permanent relic that can be utilized in crafting to restore its counterpart, ensuring it won’t be lost even if you die outside the temple.
How To Find Broken Relics
Broken Relics can always be found within regional temples. Each region has six temples, except for the Farm region, which has only two.
The Yucatali Necklace, Ring, Staff, and Chalice, however, do not have broken versions in temples and can only be crafted using standard materials at the Archaeologist’s Workbench.
Obtaining temporary Broken Relics is straightforward. All you need to do is enter a temple, open the door with the skull insignia in the first room, and retrieve two relics from the ground.
The challenge lies in successfully completing the temple for the first time or navigating its puzzles again without losing all your Archaeology Lives in one room, which would lead to the destruction of the temporary relics. At first, this task won’t be too difficult, but it will progressively get harder as the temples increase in complexity and size.
How To Get More Archaeology Lives
To gain more lives in a temple, you’ll need to upgrade your Whip to specific levels. Each time you reach the end of an upgrade tier, you’ll need the next crucial material to transform it into an upgraded version.
This upgrade will grant you an additional Archaeology Life, increasing your total to a maximum of five upon obtaining the Volcanic Whip, which is the last upgrade.
Whip Type | Lives Available |
---|---|
Whip | 1 Life |
Copper Whip | 2 Lives |
Iron Whip | 3 Lives |
Moonstone Whip | 4 Lives |
Volcanic Whip | 5 Lives |

All Archaeologist Profession Recipes
As an Archaeologist, you’ll use the Archaeologist’s Workbench to repair Broken Relics and the Ore Smelter and Rubble Refinery to gather essential metals and gems needed for many of them.
It’s wise to consider the Blacksmith or Jewelrymaker professions as a second choice if you start as an Archaeologist, since both professions utilize the Ore Smelter and Rubble Refinery while providing materials from similar sources, allowing for consistent Gold earnings.
Alongside mining materials, you’ll need various regional Relic Fragments acquired whenever you search a Treasure Pile or open any type of Treasure Chest:
- Yucatali Relic Fragments come from the Farm and Town.
- Tolcani Relic Fragments come from the Forest.
- Atziri Relic Fragments come from the Mountain.
- Zapocala Relic Fragments come from the Jungle.
