In the expansive lore of Warhammer 40,000, few events have reshaped the galaxy as profoundly as the Horus Heresy. This pivotal conflict arose from growing discord among the Primarchs, the Emperor’s progeny. While half remained loyal to the Emperor, the others fell into the embrace of Chaos, dragging their Legions of Space Marines into the fray.
This historical divide is exemplified today by the Heretic Astartes, commonly known as the Chaos Space Marines. These formidable warriors have been twisted by the dark influence of the Chaos Gods, forsaking their original purpose. As ruthless and sadistic killers, they unleash destruction across the cosmos, seeking to accomplish what Horus could not: the downfall of the Imperium of Man.
Reasons to Choose Chaos Space Marines
Some players truly relish the chaos of the battlefield. In the realm of tabletop gaming, Chaos Space Marines represent an elite, melee-focused faction that thrives on high-risk strategies and chance. Lacking the advanced wargear and technology that loyalist Space Marines possess, they instead wield Daemons and use the unpredictable powers of the Warp.
Army Rules
The experience of Chaos Space Marines is shaped by the whims of the gods. This is reflected in their Army Rule, Dark Pacts. Whenever a Chaos Space Marine unit attacks or shoots, you may opt to declare a Dark Pact. They will then have to roll for Leadership; failure results in the unit taking between one and three Mortal Wounds. Regardless of the outcome, the unit gains either Sustained Hits or Lethal Hits for that phase.
This rule is situation-dependent, often requiring careful consideration. Use it judiciously when you absolutely need to eliminate a certain enemy, hoping the gods will favor your decision.
Key Units
The forces of Chaos take various forms, many of which may remind players of the Loyalist Space Marines. Although the Heretic Astartes may seem to have fewer options, the Traitor Legions possess numerous strategies that can turn the tide in their favor.
Characters
Every successful Warband has a strong leader. Whether you prefer tyrannical warlords, cunning sorcerers, or deceptive cult leaders, the possibilities for powerful Characters are endless.
Chaos Lord |
A dark counterpart to the Space Marine Captain, the Chaos Lord offers a discount on Stratagems to their unit once per turn and can step up their melee prowess once per game. Position one to lead your strongest unit and watch the chaos unfold. |
---|---|
Chaos Sorcerer |
Your eerie support caster. This unit makes it tougher to hit and can target nearby enemies with Infernal Gaze. Additionally, if they damage an enemy, that enemy must pass a Leadership test or suffer Mortal Wounds. |
Dark Commune |
While Chaos Space Marines take the spotlight, their loyal cultists spread corruption. The Dark Commune consists of five models: the Iconward allows you to reroll Leadership tests for Dark Pacts, the Mindwitch can eliminate infantry with Psychic attacks, the Blessed Blades excel in melee, and the Demagogue grants a modest Invulnerable Save and a one-time mobility buff. Using this unit with a large group of Cultists transforms them into more than just expendable troops. |
Daemon Prince |
A towering Daemon craving destruction. They cannot join any unit nor utilize Lone Operative tactics, making them more fragile than they might seem. However, they deal considerable damage and can bolster adjacent units. For full speed, equip them with Wings, which sacrifices their aura for increased movement, Deep Strike capability, and Mortal Wounds on successful Charges. Their stats shift according to the Chaos Mark they embody: Khorne boosts melee strength, Tzeentch enhances shooting, Nurgle increases durability, and Slaanesh adds speed. |
Battleline Units
Your traitorous foot soldiers are essential for gradually dismantling the Imperium.
Legionaries |
The standard Chaos Space Marine unit, versatile enough to swap Boltguns for Chainswords and Bolt Pistols. They excel in melee and serve as solid support for a Chaos Lord, enhancing their effectiveness. |
---|---|
Cultist Mob |
Devoted followers of the Dark Gods, useful for holding positions while the Space Marines engage enemies. Though fragile and often unreliable, they can become more formidable under the leadership of a Dark Commune. |
Infantry Choices
From weak Cultists to formidable Obliterators, you’ll find a wealth of options to overpower your foes.
Chosen |
Your supercharged melee fighters. Chosen are stronger, more resilient, and quicker than Legionaries but come at a higher cost. Use them as assault troops to confront elite enemy units directly. |
---|---|
Havocs |
Cunning specialists in ranged damage. Despite being a melee-oriented army, they prove remarkably agile and dependable. Their Stabilizing Talons negate penalties and allow firing while moving. Focus them on particular tasks: Lascannons or Autocannons for heavy targets, Heavy Bolters or Chaincannons for infantry. |
Obliterators |
Sturdy walking artillery with Deep Strike options. Position them in cover, ready to attack a range of foes, including vehicles and elite troops. They also excel in melee, and can utilize Indirect Fire once per game after making a Dark Pact. |
Accursed Cultists |
Their appearance may be modest, yet they’re surprisingly robust and quick. Among them, the larger Torment units have multiple wounds and can threaten even Space Marines. |
Traitor Guardsmen Squad |
Sometimes, even members of the Astra Militarum succumb to the pull of Chaos, resulting in a reliable unit perfect for securing Objectives. They gain additional cover when holding an Objective, and their trio of special weapons allows for precision shots. |
Raptors |
These terrifying Chaos Space Marines utilize Jump Packs for mobility. A versatile threat, they can debuff enemy Leadership Tests and work best alongside a Jump Pack-wearing Chaos Lord to maximize synergy. They’re also ideal for capturing distant Objectives. |
Vehicles
Chaos isn’t just confined to living beings; machines can also be corrupted. Tanks can have their machine spirit turned by the influence of Chaos, and Daemons can be bound to vehicles, creating fearsome Daemon Engines.
Chaos Predator Annihilator/Destructor |
A reliable battle tank with a place in many army lists. The Annihilator specializes in hunting Vehicles and Monsters, while the Destructor excels at taking down Infantry. You can adapt the Destructor to handle light Vehicles and heavy Infantry effectively. |
---|---|
Chaos Vindicator |
This vehicle wields the powerful Demolisher Cannon, which is especially effective for a melee-focused army that prefers close encounters. |
Chaos Land Raider |
The ultimate transport for Chaos, large and intimidating. It provides exceptional transport and considerable firepower, making it ideal for delivering a variety of melee units. |
Chaos Rhino |
Your sole Dedicated Transport, a capable unit with a self-repair feature and upgraded weaponry. If you need to swiftly insert a unit into the fray, a Rhino is an excellent choice. |
Forgefiend/Maulerfiend |
Giant Daemon Engines termed “Dinobots,” these serve two distinct roles: the Forgefiend acts as a potent gun platform, while the Maulerfiend is a melee powerhouse. Both are excellent at destroying Vehicles, with options for dealing with Infantry as well. They tend to draw attention quickly, making Warpsmiths effective add-ons for healing, or choose units that can assist in their survival. |
Detachments
The reason the Chaos Space Marine Legions haven’t yet obliterated the Imperium lies in their internal squabbles over strategy. Some factions Excel in guerrilla-style tactics, while others prefer swaying the masses through chaotic influence. No matter your preferred method, there’s a Detachment to suit your style.

Sample Armies
Within a single Traitor Legion, every Warband has its unique flavor, resulting in various ways to construct a Chaos Space Marine army. The following lists demonstrate the strengths of their respective Detachments but feel free to adapt them using your own strategies.
Black Flag (Renegade Raiders)
- Chaos Lord (Enhancement: Mark of the Hound)
- Sorcerer
- Cultist Mob
- Legionaries
- Chosen
- Chaos Predator Destructor
- Chaos Vindicator
- Chaos Rhino x2
Strategy
Your foes think they can challenge your Objectives, but you’ve already claimed them. Your Chaos Lord will lead the Legionaries in one Rhino, while the Sorcerer supports the Chosen in the other. The Predator and Vindicator will follow, engaging foes from a distance. The Cultists will guard your homefront to keep your more elite units free to hunt.
The Lost and Damned (Chaos Cult)
- Dark Commune (Enhancement: Incendiary Goad)
- Dark Commune (Enhancement: Warped Foresight)
- Cultist Mob x2
- Traitor Guardsmen x2
- Accursed Cultists x2
- Obliterators
Strategy
Redundancy is key in this list; for every Cultist or Torment your opponent eliminates, you have more to replace them. Flood the board with models, making Objectives nearly impossible to contest while tying down enemy units in fruitless confrontations.
Let your Accursed Cultists charge ahead, using their innate movement abilities, with each Dark Commune leading them to ensure success through Dark Rituals when within range. Obliterators can Deep Strike to provide vital anti-tank support, ensuring that your horde remains intact to harass the enemy.
Tortured Metal (Soulforged Warpack)
- Warpsmith (Enhancement: Tempting Addendum)
- Warpsmith (Enhancement: Invigorated Mechatendrils)
- Cultist Mob x2
- Raptors
- Forgefiend x2
- Maulerfiend
- Venomcrawler
Strategy
Warpsmiths function as the Chaos counterpart to Techmarines, combining repair and buff abilities for your Vehicles. The Warpsmith with Tempting Addendum will remain safely between the Forgefiends for dual benefits, re-rolling hits at the cost of some Mortal Wounds, which can be healed in subsequent turns. The other will keep pace with the Maulerfiend, ensuring it stays vigorous as it charges at your enemy’s key units.
The Venomcrawler takes a flanking position to eliminate enemy infantry—if it survives, it can wreak havoc and enhance its effectiveness further. Cultists will scamper around securing Objectives, while the Raptors wait in Reserve to Deep Strike into an advantageous position.
