In Palworld, you’ll eventually need to create weapons to take on tougher Pals. The game features many high-end weapons, but you’ll begin with basic ones, progressing to better options as you advance. Early on, makeshift weapons will be essential for your survival.
These weapons significantly enhance your attacking capability and are crucial if your goal is to overcome various towers. Crafting your first makeshift weapons can seem daunting, but this guide will get you up to speed quickly.
How to Craft All Makeshift Weapons
Makeshift weapons all share similar crafting requirements but unlock at different levels in the Technology menu. You can craft these weapons at the Weapon Workbench, and for every makeshift weapon, you’ll need the following materials:
Crafting Materials for All Makeshift Weapons
Materials | How to Obtain |
---|---|
Ingot | You can create ingots from ore using any furnace. Initially, you’ll need a pickaxe to mine the large brown rocks that are scattered across the map. Once you reach level 15, you can establish an Ore Mining Site and assign Pals with mining skills to gather ore for you. |
High Quality Pal Oil | Catch or defeat specific Pals like Dumud, Digtoise, or Relaxaurus to obtain High Quality Pal Oil. Dumud and Digtoise can often be found near the Anubis Alpha Pal’s location in the desert area. |
Fiber | Collect fiber by chopping down trees for wood. If you don’t have an axe, you can use a weapon or a Pal skill to make trees drop some fiber and wood. |
While all makeshift weapons require these materials, the amounts needed may vary. Additionally, you’ll need Coarse Ammo to use any of these weapons.
Tip: Coarse Ammo can be obtained from Syndicate Thugs or crafted at the Weapon Workbench using 2 ingots and 1 gunpowder.
You’ll need the Weapon Workbench to create all makeshift weapons, which is available at level 20 in the Technology menu for three Technology Points. Building it requires 15 ingots, 50 wood, and 10 nails.
Gunpowder is unlocked at level 21 and can be made from sulfur and charcoal using a High Quality Workbench. You can find sulfur deposits in the desert region near the Anubis Alpha Pal. Charcoal is made from burning wood in any furnace.

Makeshift Handgun
The Makeshift Handgun is an excellent choice for early-game combat due to its impressive firepower. It allows for up to six shots before reloading. While the range isn’t great, it remains effective at close to mid-range.
Tip: Keep the Makeshift Handgun handy until you find a higher-quality replacement, as it often outperforms the Makeshift SMG.
Makeshift SMG
The Makeshift SMG offers a good firing rate for initial encounters. It can deal a lot of damage up-close but will quickly deplete your ammo if used frequently.
Tip: Even with a rapid fire rate, its spray accuracy can be quite poor, so transitioning to the Makeshift Assault Rifle or a better weapon is advisable as soon as possible.
Makeshift Shotgun
Ideal for point-blank engagements, the Makeshift Shotgun is capable of inflicting substantial damage, but it requires reloading after each shot. Keeping this weapon can be advantageous for delivering quick damage to enemies before switching to others.
Note: Although you’ll need to reload often, the damage potential makes this weapon worth keeping equipped.
Makeshift Assault Rifle
The Makeshift Assault Rifle provides a solid balance of firing rate and power. It allows for continuous fire with better accuracy than the Makeshift SMG, and with only 15 bullets in each magazine, you’re less likely to run out quickly.
Note: This weapon is a solid choice to hold on to until you find a more powerful assault rifle and can be particularly useful during early boss fights or against towers.
