The scarecrow is an essential item in Stardew Valley used to safeguard your crops. Shortly after you begin planting and nurturing your fields, those annoying crows will appear to munch on your hard work.
If you ignore this issue, you’ll start losing money to these pesky birds. Therefore, it’s important to craft a Scarecrow as soon as you have the means and place it close to your crops. This guide will explore how to effectively use the scarecrow and the various types available in the game.
How to Create and Use Scarecrows
To unlock the Scarecrow recipe, you need to start leveling up your Farming skill. You can achieve this easily by harvesting your initial crops.
Once you attain level 1 in Farming, you’ll receive the recipe for the Scarecrow. To craft it, you’ll need 50 Wood, one Coal, and 20 Fiber.
To craft the item, open your crafting menu and click on the Scarecrow. If you have the necessary materials, you’ll successfully create it, and it will then be added to your inventory.
When you’re ready to set down the Scarecrow, select it from your inventory and place it on the ground.
The Scarecrow protects eight tiles on each side and about six tiles on each corner, covering a total of 249 tiles in its radius.
While the Scarecrow is on your farm, you can click on it to check how many crows it has scared away. If you remove the Scarecrow for any reason, the crow count resets.
All Scarecrows in Stardew Valley
In addition to the basic scarecrow, there are eight Rarecrows you can collect throughout the game, each offering the same protective radius as the initial Scarecrow.
Once you gather all eight Rarecrows and use each one at least once, you will unlock the recipe for the Deluxe Scarecrow, which has twice the coverage of the standard version.
