You might be surprised to find that fishing is part of the gameplay in Squirreled Away, a charming survival game where you step into the paws of a squirrel. Yes, you can actually attach a string to a little stick and go fishing for the tiniest fish in your park!
Fishing in Squirreled Away has its nuances, and the game encourages you to discover them through experience. Once you get the hang of it, it’s quite straightforward, and it’s the only way to earn a majestic fishing trophy to showcase in your cozy squirrel home.
How To Craft A Fishing Rod
Before diving into fishing, you’ll need to create a fishing rod first. Crafting it requires six sticks, two strings, and two paperclips.
All these materials can be gathered in the Forest Nook, the first main area you reach after leaving Sunrise Isle, the tutorial island.
- Get String from spiderwebs around King Needlenose’s domain; activate your Squirrel Vision to spot him more easily.
- Collect Sticks easily from trees using any axe.
- Find Paperclips on the physical map in each area. In Forest Nook, look around Daredevil and near the entrance to Fountain Springs.
How To Fish
Fishing is quite easy! With a little patience, you’ll be able to catch the fish you want. Just cast your line into the water and reel it in when you feel a tug. This will fetch you any fish available in that specific body of water.
Every Fishing Bait And What It Does
There are three different types of fishing bait, each with its own unique effect.
Bait |
Recipe |
Effect |
---|---|---|
Acorn Meatball Bait |
1 Acorn + 2 Mushroom Chunks |
This bait slightly increases your chance of catching higher-quality fish. You can still catch the best fish without it, so it’s not a must-have. |
Almond Sausage Bait |
1 Almond + 2 Mushroom Chunks |
This bait slightly speeds up your fish-catching process. Normally you catch fish quickly, but this is handy if you need to stock up in a hurry. |
Magnetized Bait |
3 Can Scraps + 1 Paperclip |
This allows you to collect coins from fountains. It only works in self-contained fountains, like the one in Fountain Springs. You can use coins in vending machines for cans. |
Bait is used automatically as long as it’s in your inventory.
Where To Find Every Fish
There are three types of fish you can catch, and each comes in three rarities, ranging from one to three stars. One-star fish are the most common, while three-star fish are the rarest.
Where To Catch Neon Tetra
Neon Tetras can be found in any region except The Ascended Gardens. If you’re specifically looking for Neon Tetra, go to the large body of water surrounding the map, as it’s the only place to catch this fish. Most other water bodies include Neon Tetra along with other types of fish.
Where To Catch Goldfish
Goldfish can be found in every region except for Sunrise Isle. The only body of water on Sunrise Isle surrounds the island and contains only Neon Tetra. In The Forest Nook, the river is rich in Goldfish, making it the best spot if you are specifically looking for them.
Where To Catch Koi
Koi are the rarest type of fish in the game and can only be found in The Ascended Gardens. Unlike other fish types, there isn’t a specific water body that only gives Koi. While fishing near the central building in The Ascended Gardens, you may catch Koi, but you’ll likely get Goldfish more often.
How To Use Fish
Fish aren’t part of a healthy squirrel diet and aren’t used in any cooking recipes. However, you can proudly exhibit your catches on a Fish Plaque. To create a fish plaque, you’ll need just two planks, crafted from two sticks at a Saw Station.
Fish Plaques can only be hung on walls.
Once your Fish Plaque is up, you can interact with it to bring up your inventory. Simply move the fish you want to display from your inventory to the plaque’s inventory, allowing you to showcase your fishing accomplishments forever.
