While navigating the Stone Wave Cliffs in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, you’ll encounter an unusual adversary with multiple arms and an array of lanterns. This formidable foe is known as the Lampmaster, the primary boss in this region.
The Lampmaster poses a significant challenge, especially when compared to earlier story bosses you’ve faced. Even so, it isn’t unbeatable, and there are strategies to help make the battle more manageable. Here’s a rundown on how to conquer this enemy.
Phase One
The initial phase takes place within a dim cave. Unlike other boss encounters, you need to significantly reduce the Lampmaster’s health to advance to Phase Two. Fortunately, this first stage isn’t excessively difficult.
Lampmaster’s Phase One Attacks
Here are the attacks the Lampmaster employs during this phase:
Attack |
Description |
---|---|
Jump Attack |
A typical jump attack where the Lampmaster leaps and tries to smash down on you. |
Shoots With Its Lights |
The boss fires projectiles from four of its lanterns at random party members. |
Aim Disrupting Attack |
The Lampmaster executes a three-hit combo with its sword that can make your character dizzy if hit. |
The Power Of Lamps Attack |
The Lampmaster gathers purple energy and unleashes it at your entire party. |
How To Complete Phase One
A key point during Phase One is that you can shoot the four lanterns the boss uses. Taking them out not only prevents that attack from happening but also inflicts damage on the Lampmaster.
Interestingly, the reticle doesn’t change when aiming at the lights, unlike when targeting other destructible objects.
When dismantling the lights, consider using a character with lower offensive skills to conserve your stronger characters’ AP.
Countering the Lampmaster’s moves, especially the large purple attack, can be quite rewarding since counterattacks deal substantial damage. Moreover, aim to fill and break the boss’s break meter, using characters with skills suited for this tactic.
While the Lampmaster doesn’t have a specific elemental vulnerability, it is resistant to light. Avoid using light-element weapons. Focus on unleashing your most powerful attacks without consuming items, as you’ll likely need them in the more challenging second phase.
Phase Two
In Phase Two, visibility improves as the fight transitions out of the cave, but this part of the battle is considerably tougher.
Lampmaster’s Phase Two Attacks
The Lampmaster showcases new attacks during this phase:
Attack |
Description |
---|---|
Flying Combo |
The boss unleashes a combo of four or five hits, including a hit where it appears to float away before returning for another strike. |
Sword Of Light |
The creature swings its massive sword at the entire party, dealing major damage. |
Each Arm Attack |
In this move, the Lampmaster executes a four-hit combo by swinging its arms back and forth. |
Vast Ball Of Light |
The boss gathers energy into a ball of light and launches it at your entire team. |
How To Complete Phase Two
The key to overcoming Phase Two lies in the peculiar ritual that the Lampmaster performs intermittently. During this time, the fight momentarily pauses, and the boss’s lanterns light up in a specific order. When control returns to your team, you’ll need to aim freely to shoot the lanterns in the order they lit up.
Completing the ritual inflicts substantial damage to the Lampmaster and prevents it from using its Sword of Light attack—a crucial move that can be hard to dodge. Moreover, targeting the correct lanterns means you won’t lose any AP, allowing for free shots.
The remainder of this phase focuses on dealing as much damage as possible quickly. Remember, the Lampmaster remains resistant to light and lacks a clear weakness, making the light ritual essential for gaining an upper hand.
