The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered features numerous quests that allow players to make meaningful choices. These decisions can lead to rewards for doing the right thing along the way.
The quest titled “Corruption and Conscience” is a prime example where your choices greatly influence the outcome. Set in Cheydinhal, the local residents are suffering from excessive fines imposed by the new guard captain, Ulrich Leland.
How to Begin the Corruption and Conscience Quest
To kick off the Corruption and Conscience quest, you need to ask townspeople for rumors. They will inform you about the unfair fines, and you can inquire about them further. This will lead you to Lievana Nedaren, a resident who is particularly vocal against the fines.
You can find Lievana either wandering the city or at her home, located near the north gate. She will tell you that Aldos Othran was evicted from his house because he couldn’t afford the fines. She will then ask you to speak with Garrus Darellium, the vice captain of the guard, who also disapproves of Ulrich.
Corruption and Conscience Quest Guide
Next, you should head to the Cheydinhal Castle to talk with Garrus Darellium. If you bring up Ulrich immediately, he may not be ready to discuss it. You can try to persuade him and then talk to him again about Ulrich.
Garrus will mention wanting to call Aldos Othran as a witness. However, when you approach Aldos, he’ll ask you to follow him to see what he does. Aldos will then attack a guard standing outside his home, resulting in his death.
Afterward, you will need to update Lievana about Aldos’s fate. She will be heartbroken and ask you to bring Ulrich to her so that she can confront him directly. Return to Garrus in Cheydinhal Castle to inform him of Lievana’s request.
Garrus will caution you against this plan and suggest that you find evidence in Ulrich’s quarters to arrest him without unnecessary conflict. You will then need to decide whether to follow Garrus’s approach or lead Ulrich to Lievana for her revenge.
Bringing Ulrich to Lievana
If you choose to take Ulrich to Lievana, she will summon some rats inside her house that will attack him after a heated confrontation. Once Ulrich is dealt with, Lievana will ask you to inform Garrus of what happened, ready to face the consequences.
Garrus will express disappointment that you didn’t gather evidence to arrest Ulrich instead of killing him. However, he will try to lessen Lievana’s punishment. He will then request that you meet him at the Cheydinhal Bridge Inn in two hours.
The Cheydinhal Bridge Inn is located near the west gate of Cheydinhal.
When you meet Garrus at the inn, he will tell you he has spoken to the count regarding Ulrich’s misdeeds and has taken steps to reduce Lievana’s sentence. You will learn that you haven’t committed any crime by leading Ulrich to his doom. In fact, Garrus will reward you with 175 gold, and Lievana will end up in prison, concluding the quest.
Searching for Evidence Against Ulrich
If you choose to follow Garrus’s suggestion and look for evidence, make your way to the Cheydinhal City Barracks and enter Ulrich’s room. There, you will discover a suspicious letter on a book. Collect it and take it back to Garrus.
Garrus will express his excitement and ask you to meet him again at the Cheydinhal Bridge Inn in two hours. After waiting inside, Garrus will reveal that he has been promoted to captain of the guard and will reward you with 250 gold coins.
This wraps up the Corruption and Conscience quest, allowing you to save Lievana from a lengthy prison sentence.
