The Monster Hunter series has always been presented as a tough gaming experience, featuring intense gameplay where players hunt enormous monsters, gather their parts, and grind for more resources. However, the franchise also incorporates playful elements to lighten the mood.
One of the ways the game achieves this is through minigames. In Monster Hunter Wilds, the Title Update 1 introduces Barrel Bowling, which adds an amusing and explosive twist to your bowling experience. Here’s what you need to know to get started and become a bowling champ.
Where to Find Barrel Bowling
Barrel Bowling is located exclusively in the Grand Hub area, newly introduced in Title Update 1. Once there, you can find Rolie and his bowling station on the far right side of the map.
After your first visit, you’ll be able to fast-travel directly to the minigame.
Understanding Barrel Bowling
Barrel Bowling functions much like traditional bowling, allowing you two attempts to roll a barrel down the lane and knock over as many pins as possible.
Unlike regular bowling, which typically features nine pins, the Monster Hunter version has over 60 pins of three different sizes, with specific point values assigned (2 for the smallest, 20 for medium, and 200 for the largest). Additionally, your barrel will explode after being thrown, offering an opportunity for an even higher score.
Playing Barrel Bowling rewards you with various consumables, and some special items to keep an eye out for. Your first game will earn you the Barrel Bowling Strap pendant, while achieving an A rank (over 500 points) gets you the Barrel Bowling Trophy pendant.
To join in the minigame, you’ll need a Barrel Bowling voucher, which can be obtained through log-in bonuses, trading with villagers, or the Support Ship.
While rewards require a voucher, you can still enjoy bowling for fun. Use this time to practice and devise your strategy for competitive play.
Tips for Barrel Bowling
Focus on knocking over the one pin worth 200 points first, as it should be your top priority. After that, aim for as many other pins as you can.
At the edge of the bowling lane are small orange arrows that help guide your shots. Start your first roll from the arrow second to the left, and aim directly for the gap between the two rocks at the end of the lane. This should take out most of the pins on the left side and may even trigger the explosion of the largest pin with a good bounce.
If you miss the 200-point pin, don’t worry—you’ll have another chance on your next roll.
Your second shot will be simpler. Take a barrel and position yourself on the arrow second to the right. Aim straight for the 200-point pin (or where it was if you already knocked it down) and roll the barrel down the lane. This should help you collect most of the pins on the right side and hit the largest pin if you haven’t done so yet.
