Today’s puzzle for Connections presents a challenge not because it’s particularly hard, but rather due to the arrangement of the words that might lead you astray. At first glance, some combinations seem straightforward, but as you explore deeper, you’ll find that one or two options don’t quite align with the rest. To keep from getting tangled up like I did, pay attention to some key hints to help guide your thinking.
This puzzle revolves around the theme of the odd one out, where one word diverges from the others in a given group. Similar to the way a single word in the Letter Boxed game might cause you to hesitate, these puzzles encourage you to rethink your choices. Like any Connections puzzle, you have four tries to identify four sets of four words before you run out of chances.

To tackle today’s challenge, I began by identifying words in their respective columns that stood out. Certain words can give you an immediate sense of the underlying theme, providing a helpful start. Nevertheless, be cautious; the arrangement of these words is intentionally made to mislead.

- One group consists of terms related to taking something from someone else.
- Another group involves descriptors for presence in a school setting.
- There’s a category focused on how words are expressed both digitally and physically.

Answers for April 13, Puzzle #672
Yellow Answers: Explained
- STEAL
- NICK
- PINCH
I found this section challenging as SWIPE was the only word that resonated with multiple interpretations. I initially thought of POCKET in a literal sense, but understanding that NICK and PINCH are slang for taking something helped me piece together the rest of the set. Even though POCKET turned out to be the word that didn’t quite fit the theme, the other words provided enough context once I recognized the less literal connections.
Green Answers: Explained
- ATTENDANCE STATUS
- ABSENT
- EXCUSED
- LATE
- PRESENT
This segment was easier for me, as I quickly linked ABSENT and LATE. Anyone who has ever worried about these at school might recognize this pattern instantly. Once I had the first two down, EXCUSED followed naturally, but it took me a bit to understand that PRESENT referred to attendance rather than a gift.
Blue Answers: Explained
- FONT-MODIFYING WORDS
- GOTHIC
- ROMAN
- SANS
- TYPEWRITER
Being familiar with various font types helped me quickly identify GOTHIC, ROMAN, and SANS as referring to specific styles like Blackletter Gothic, Times New Roman, and Comic Sans. However, I struggled a bit with the last piece of the puzzle—TYPEWRITER made sense as it represents a way fonts can be displayed.
Purple Answers: Explained
- ___BERRY
- CAPER
- ELDER
- GOOSE
- LOGAN
This was potentially the trickiest section of today’s puzzle due to its subtle patterns. Fortunately, I had recently watched Monty Python and the Holy Grail, which reminded me of elderberries thanks to a memorable joke. Once I figured out ELDER, the others—GOOSE for gooseberry, LOGAN for loganberry, and CAPER for caperberry—came together quickly.
