Mining plays a significant role in many games, be it the survival of Minecraft or the tranquil life simulation in Fields of Mistria. In Luma Island, players will immerse themselves in a unique mining experience. You’ll explore ancient caves scattered across the island, seeking out essential metals, valuable gems, and maybe even a hidden treasure.
However, beware! Caves also house spiders eager to surprise and attack unsuspecting explorers. Watch your head, as rocks may tumble down, and the darkness can feel menacing.
How to Locate the Caves
While there are small deposits of ore to discover in certain mountainous regions or within specific temple rooms, the main source for ore and gems is found exclusively in biome-specific caves.
- The first cave you can explore is the Abandoned Farm Cave, conveniently located near your home.
- The second cave is the Lost Forest Cave, which you’ll need to access by repairing the town’s bridge. This cave is situated in the northern corner on the western side, past the stone bridge.
- The third cave, the Frozen Mountain Cave, requires you to fix the town’s Cable Car before riding up to the mountain, located northwest of the area entrance.
Additional smaller caves are found in areas like the Forest, containing resources such as Charcoal and various Ores. However, these lesser caves won’t have gems or enemies, and once you’ve mined their resources, they can’t be reset.
It’s worth noting that many of these smaller caves can help you access new areas or provide shortcuts closer to the main entrances.
Once you reach the Forest, you’ll find incomplete campsites outside a major cave, equipped with basic crafting stations like a Sawmill, Kiln, Ore Smelter, and Simple Workbench. You can finish building them with materials from that specific region.
How to Explore the Caves
When you first enter a cave, expect a well-lit area, perhaps with some trees and bushes, while the deeper sections will be shrouded in darkness—though glowing gems may light a distant path.
To navigate effectively, you’ll need to use one of three types of torches, as the darkness can quickly overwhelm you, pushing you back to the cave’s entrance. Each area provides a unique Resin and Torch type with varying light color and effectiveness:
Torch Type | Resin Needed | Light Radius | Duration |
---|---|---|---|
Farm Torch | Farm Resin | Small | Two In-game Days |
Forest Torch | Forest Resin | Medium | Four In-game Days |
Mountain Torch | Mountain Resin | Large | Six In-game Days |
Torches expire after a set period but can be reignited simply by running over them.
As you explore, expect to find Charcoal and ore scattered throughout the cave, while gems will typically be further inside, with rarer types located near the cave’s depths. Most caves, aside from the Abandoned Farm Cave, also introduce a dangerous variant of local stones that can quickly end your exploration if you aren’t cautious.
- In the Lost Forest Cave, certain rocks may explode, releasing poison gas that blurs your screen.
- In the Frozen Mountain Cave, rocks may detonate after a few moments, causing destruction around them.
Moreover, look out for Old Barrels and Crates that can be broken with your Whip; these often contain useful cave items like Torches and Flares, and occasionally give small amounts of Ore and Charcoal. Flares are particularly handy for lighting up a wide area temporarily, potentially saving your life if you run low on torches.
How to Deal with Spiders
As you linger in the caves, keep in mind that the likelihood of encountering a Spider enemy increases. These critters are your primary threat while exploring underground.
Spiders will wander around after spawning, and if you get too close, they’ll pursue you. It’s essential to put some distance between you and them, or you may find yourself in a chase.
When a Spider is about to spawn, you’ll notice a flash of colored light followed by a distinct hissing sound, which serves as a warning. Additionally, mining gems creates a loud noise that can also attract Spiders, significantly increasing their spawn chances nearby.
If a Spider comes too close or you prefer not to engage, use your Whip to fend them off. Each hit will stun the creature temporarily. You can even time your strikes in a way that gives you breathing room to escape if necessary.
To farm Spiders for rare drops like Webbed Gems, consider utilizing strategies that make them spawn by mining gems.
Different cave types feature various Spider variants. Although they share damage capabilities, appearance and speed may vary:
- The Farm Spider is the slowest.
- The Forest Spider is intermediate in speed.
- The Mountain Spider is the most agile.
In higher-level caves like the Frozen Mountain Cave, multiple Spiders may spawn simultaneously, either naturally or drawn in by your gem-mining activities.
How to Reset a Cave’s Interior
At some point, a cave might deplete its resources. In this case, you’ll need to locate a Cave Reset Beacon to refresh resources.
Each cave contains one of these beacons, typically found on the outer edges of the cave’s interior. These beacons are located in well-lit areas, similar to the cave’s entrance, making them somewhat visible, provided you’ve ventured deep enough.
To activate the beacon, simply interact with it; a countdown will commence, allowing you 90 seconds to gather any last resources and exit the cave before it collapses, sending you back to the entrance.
Next time you return, the entire cave layout will be reset, enabling resource collection once again. There’s no limit to how many times you can reset a cave, but you will need to locate the beacon each time.
All Mining Resources and Their Uses
All cave resources play a crucial role in tool upgrades. Notably, ores and gems are vital for the Blacksmithing and Jewelrycrafter professions, while metal bars are necessary for making magnets, especially useful for Treasure Hunters.
