The Reaper career in The Sims 4: Life and Death offers a unique spin on the classic role of the Grim Reaper, allowing you to step into their shoes as an apprentice. As a new Grimtern, you’ll face challenges on your path to becoming a full-fledged Reaper, but you can accompany your Sim to work to assist them along the way.
Traditionally, the Grim Reaper has always come to claim those who have passed away in The Sims 4. Now, you can be a learner in the art of reaping. As you advance, your Sim’s daily tasks will intensify, with ten levels of career advancement to navigate. Here’s everything you need to know about starting your Reaper career in The Sims 4: Life and Death, and how to achieve that vital performance rating.
In addition to the Reaper career, you can explore various dark themes in Life and Death, such as drafting a will or investigating the secrets of the Guardian Tree.
How to Start Your Reaper Career
To embark on a Reaper career, select the “Find a Job” option from your Sim’s computer or phone. This will bring up a menu where you can scroll through available jobs, including the Reaper position.
If you’re beginning fresh with a new Sim, consider traits that align with this career, such as Genius, Practice Makes Perfect, and Macabre from Life and Death. Being macabre helps your Sim cope better with death, which they’ll encounter frequently in this line of work.
How to Complete Reaper Tasks
Upon joining as a Grimtern, you’ll need to perform daily tasks at the Netherworld Department of Death (NWDD), such as practicing reaping, socializing with coworkers, and maintaining your scythe. You can even join in on these tasks yourself since it’s an active career.
Your first day will involve inspecting Frank, a test body, where you’ll investigate the cause of death and learn the ropes of being a Reaper. Finally, you’ll get the chance to reap a soul. For the highest chance of success, select either “Collect Soul” or “Collect Soul Carefully” from the menu.
Daily activities at the NWDD will typically involve interacting with the Scry Bowl and going out to reap souls. Before heading out, you might have preparatory tasks like completing a research assignment. Completing these tasks can significantly enhance your chances of successfully collecting a soul.
While out on a mission, you’ll also undertake tasks such as filing death certificates, analyzing death trends, and scheduling reaps. As you progress, you’ll be guided on which tasks to accomplish for optimal performance ratings, which can lead to promotions.
When you venture out to reap a soul, here’s what needs to be done:
- Talk to Witnesses: Sims present at the scene will typically have witnessed the death. You can engage with them by selecting the scythe icon next to their option.
- Investigate Nearby Items: Examine items located around the area, keeping interactions simple.
- Determine Cause of Death: You’ll have several choices from checking temperature to pulse. Upon checking the most relevant options, you’ll determine the cause of death.
- Collect Soul: Prioritize “Collect Soul” or “Collect Soul Carefully” for higher success rates, though options like “flamboyantly” or “like Grim” have lower success.
- Ask for Review: Click the urn to request a review from the soul.
- Return the Urn to the Family: This task is optional but will enhance your performance rating.
- Soothe Witnesses: Another optional task displayed with a scythe icon.
- Build Rapport with Witnesses: Engage in further discussions with witnesses.
- Head back to the Office: Select your Sim to travel back to NWDD.
Before the Life and Death expansion, you had the option to plead with the Grim Reaper, and now, as a Reaper, other Sims can plead with you. Look for a Sim with “Listen to Plea,” where you can choose to collect their soul or spare their life. If you decide to spare them, they can be revived; if not, you continue on your path.
Besides days dedicated to reaping, you’ll encounter situations that require cleaning up soul escapees from Netherworld Fissures. Your tasks in such scenarios include:
- Harvest Grimbrosia: Click the orange plant to gather.
- Close Netherworld Fissures: Identify the glowing blue cracks; though you can reach inside, it’s better to avoid doing so.
- Gather Lost Souls: Collecting these contributes to your weekly soul quota.
- Return to the Office: Travel back to the NWDD.
- Craft Grimbrosia: Grim appreciates this treat, and delivering it will earn you brownie points.
Completing Emergency Tasks as a Reaper
On certain days, you won’t be tasked with soul collection but will deal with emergencies at Reaper HQ. This involves different tasks such as closing Netherworld Fissures, repairing the Netherworld portal, and recalibrating Grim’s Slablet.
Fulfilling Your Weekly Soul Quota
Meeting your weekly soul quota not only helps boost your performance rating but can be checked on a computer or by setting reminders. Falling short comes with performance penalties, while achieving or exceeding your quota earns you a performance boost, along with a reward from the mysterious chest at NWDD.
You’ll work toward your soul quota alongside your fellow Reapers, gathering them daily while working. If you need additional help with your quota, you can pay the Mysterious Merchant, named Waylon Warez, at the Eternal Hollow Cemetery in Crow’s Crossing on most evenings or find him at random festivals. He’s somewhat elusive, however.
Advancing in the Reaper Career
There are ten tiers within the Reaper career, and fulfilling your daily responsibilities is crucial. Additionally, it’s important to focus on developing your Thanatology, Charisma, and Fitness skills. Charisma and Fitness can be enhanced through conventional activities like reading or exercising, while Thanatology, a unique skill, can be improved by engaging with spectral beings, reading relevant texts, or utilizing computer resources.
To progress, you’ll need to release a required number of souls, and at level 6, you will even have to draft a Reaping Manual. If you’re looking to expedite your progress, you can utilize cheats available in our Sims 4 career cheats and Sims 4 skill cheats.
