At the recent TED 2025 conference, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman addressed the impact of the emerging DeepSeek technology, stating that it has not hindered the growth of GPT. He also announced that the company plans to release better open-source models in the near future.
According to a report by market research firm App Figures, ChatGPT was the most downloaded non-gaming application globally in March 2025, amassing 46 million downloads, surpassing popular apps like Instagram and TikTok. The data was based on statistics from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
Earlier this month, OpenAI indicated that it would be launching its first open-source language model since GPT-2 within the next few months. During a recent Q&A session on Reddit, Altman echoed his belief that OpenAI has made historical missteps in sharing its technology openly. He later elaborated on the company’s plans for open-source models on the X platform, revealing that the upcoming model would possess reasoning capabilities similar to those of OpenAI’s o3-mini.
