If you’re a fan of using artificial intelligence to craft images and art, you’ll be excited to know that ChatGPT’s latest model is now accessible to everyone.
ChatGPT’s New Image Generator Now Available
OpenAI has rolled out the updated GPT-4o image generator for ChatGPT, making it available to all users, including those on the free plan. Launched on March 25, this new model has left many users in awe with its impressive capabilities and versatility in image generation.
Previously, ChatGPT allowed users to create images using its DALL-E model, which yielded generally decent results. However, it faced challenges with certain aspects, such as generating realistic hands.
Now, with the introduction of the new GPT-4o model, ChatGPT appears to be significantly enhanced in producing striking AI-generated images. You can see a detailed comparison between the two image generation models in our article.
Following the initial launch of the GPT-4o image generator, OpenAI noted on X that the rollout for free users might experience delays due to a high volume of paid users eager to try it, alongside the viral popularity of its Studio Ghibli-inspired artwork.
This surge sparked some backlash, particularly because of copyright concerns. As reported by Mashable, it also tied back to the sentiments expressed by Hayao Miyazaki, a co-founder of Studio Ghibli, regarding his distaste for AI-generated art.
However, the delays subsided shortly thereafter, with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announcing via social media that the feature is now available for all. To maintain a balance, free users have a limit of generating three GPT-4o images daily, consistent with the initial plan.
Anticipate More Studio Ghibli-inspired Art Going Viral
Even with the restriction of three images per day for free users, the expanded access to the GPT-4o model is expected to increase the amount of Studio Ghibli-inspired art flooding social media. Much of it has already been shared, with opinions divided—some dismiss it as “AI slop”—but personally, I’m enjoying this emerging trend.
Displayed above is my first attempt at creating artwork in the signature Studio Ghibli style. While this depiction of a serene cat meditating atop a mountain may not be award-winning material, the process was satisfying, especially as I’m a fan of Studio Ghibli’s animated films.
In fact, I plan to make sure I utilize my three free images each day. Although I’m not the most frequent ChatGPT user, I can’t resist experimenting whenever it acquires a new capability. It’s fascinating to see the advancements in generative AI.
