The eagerly anticipated moment for ChatGPT Plus subscribers has arrived: you can now access OpenAI’s deep research tool as part of your monthly subscription.
OpenAI Launches Deep Research for ChatGPT Plus Subscribers
Previously exclusive to the $200 Professional subscription tier, Plus subscribers can now harness this AI tool to generate thorough reports on virtually any subject.
The deep research tool became available starting February 25, 2025, according to an announcement on OpenAI’s X account.
ChatGPT Plus subscribers can submit up to ten deep research queries each month, a figure that may increase in the future.
When OpenAI first introduced deep research, they specified that the process is “currently very compute intensive.” As the feature expands, the quota for queries will likely grow—although there’s no immediate plan for the vast number of free users.
ChatGPT Professional subscribers will also see their allowance of deep research queries increase from 100 to 120.
The deep research tool is designed to autonomously gather and analyze information from numerous sources, creating comprehensive reports based on its findings. It can search the web and compile data from thousands of sources to produce unique research documents.
This process is significantly faster than what a human could accomplish. Depending on the complexity of the report, it can take ChatGPT anywhere from five minutes to over an hour to complete a thorough analysis. Users can also observe the tool’s ongoing processes in a side panel, showing precisely what it is evaluating at each stage.
In addition to rolling out the deep research feature for ChatGPT Plus subscribers, OpenAI has implemented some enhancements to the tool. Deep research now supports embedding images with citations and demonstrates improved capabilities in analyzing and referencing user-uploaded files.
It’s important to note that ChatGPT’s deep research feature is distinct from ChatGPT Operator, the autonomous AI agent designed to interact with businesses, make reservations, and perform other tasks. Deep research is focused solely on generating detailed reports.
How to Explore ChatGPT Deep Research
OpenAI is currently rolling out the deep research feature for ChatGPT Plus subscribers, and it should soon be available on your account.
As with all ChatGPT feature updates, it may take some time to appear for everyone. If you don’t see the “deep research” option in the ChatGPT AI model selection yet, just be patient—your turn is coming!
