When enjoying a film or your favorite TV series, you might have experienced sudden and jarring changes in sound, particularly when the more intense volume of commercials arrives, often catching you off guard. Thankfully, there’s a solution: volume normalization.

If you’re using a Windows 11 computer, you’ll find this feature referred to as Volume Equalization. Its availability hinges on the sound driver or the integrated audio hardware on your device. Nonetheless, most sound drivers support this normalization feature.

To enable Volume Equalization, start by clicking the Windows icon, then navigate to Settings > System > Sound > Advanced Sound Settings. In this interface, select your playback device, click on Properties – Extensions, and check the box for Volume Equalization.

Once done, click OK to save your settings. From this point on, Windows will automatically adjust the volume during quieter segments of your movie or show while toning it down during commercial breaks. However, it’s worth noting that while volume equalization can enhance regular viewing, it may not be as effective for music playback since highly dynamic tracks might lose their intended impact.
